Update: The special welcome offer for the The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card from American Express has expired, but you can learn more about best available offers here.
Recently American Express introduced The Blue BusinessSM Plus Credit Card, which is one of the hottest new credit cards in the market. The card has no annual fee, accrues Membership Rewards points that can be transferred to airline and hotel partners, and most valuable of all, it offers 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent annually. On top of that, it’s offering a special sign-up bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points upon completing minimum spend.
The way I see it, that makes this card the single most lucrative credit card for non-bonused spend. I’ve explained in a previous post why you should consider applying for the card, and also explained how you can apply for this card as a sole proprietorship, even if you don’t have a corporation.
This is a card that a lot of people will surely be maxing out in terms of value, so I’ve been asked how exactly the $50,000 annual limit on the Blue Business Plus Credit Card works. The card offers 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent annually, and then 1x point per dollar spent after that, with no limits on how many points you can earn.
Generally there are three ways that credit card companies calculate an annual or anniversary benefit:
- It’s based on your cardmember year (12 months from when you opened the card)
- It’s based on a strict calendar year (January 1 through December 31)
- It’s based on a modified calendar year, depending on what date your first annual statement closes (for example, January 12 through the following January 12)
The $50,000 annual double points limit on the Blue Business Plus Credit Card is calculated based on a strict calendar year. In other words, it’s based on your spend between January 1 and December 31 of a given year, regardless of when your statement closes.
Here’s how the terms describe this benefit:
With your Blue Business Plus Card from American Express, you earn one Membership Rewards® point for each dollar you spend on your Card for eligible purchases. For the first $50,000 in eligible purchases in each calendar year you also earn one additional point (for a total of 2 points). Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional terms and restrictions apply.
If you’re a business that spends a lot in non-bonused categories, then it makes sense to get the Blue Business Plus Credit Card as soon as possible, so you can earn the 2x points for the first $50,000 spent in 2017, and then that will be reset again in 2018.
