Linking Your Blue Business Plus Card To Your Membership Rewards Account

Recently American Express introduced The Blue BusinessSM Plus Credit Card, which is one of the hottest new credit cards in the market. The card has no annual fee, accrues Membership Rewards points that can be transferred to airline and hotel partners, and most valuable of all, it offers 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent annually. On top of that, it’s offering a special sign-up bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points upon completing minimum spend.

The way I see it, that makes this card the single most lucrative credit card for non-bonused spend. I’ve explained in a previous post why you should consider applying for the card, and also explained how you can apply for this card as a sole proprietorship, even if you don’t have a corporation.

However, after applying for the card, some readers have been confused about how to add the Blue Business Plus Credit Card to their existing online profile, so that they can pool all their Membership Rewards points. For example, reader Yang asked the following:

Hi Ben, I applied and was approved with the new Amex Blue Business Card with your link!

However, the system does not allow me to add this card to my existing Amex online account and I have to create a new online account for that card.

As I am planing to close my Platinum Card but don’t want to lose my Membership Rewards points, I was wondering if this Blue Business can still help to keep my points alive even in a different online account? Thanks!

This is an issue some people seem to be having, so let’s talk about that.

The easy way to link your card to other Amex accounts

First of all, Ford just applied for the Blue Business Plus Credit Card this morning, and was instantly approved.

After the approval he was brought to a page where he could choose to create a new account, or add the card to an existing account.

He had no trouble adding the card to his existing online log-in, and it showed up there immediately. However, I recognize that this is where others are having issues.

A lot of people aren’t having that experience. Apparently some people aren’t able to add their new card to their existing account because they’re not indicating whether or not they want to take advantage of a balance transfer option. On the approval page you’ll be asked if you want to make a balance transfer — just select either “No, Thank You” or “Submit All.” If you don’t, you often won’t immediately be able to link your card to an existing account… at least that’s the experience that many are having.

In case that doesn’t work…

If you’re one of the people who isn’t able to link your Blue Business Plus Credit Card to your existing account at the time you’re approved (either because you forgot to select the balance transfer option, or for whatever other reason), don’t register the card online yet, but rather wait until you get it in the mail. Most report luck linking the card once it arrives in the mail.

In case you don’t take the above advice and still create a new log-in, don’t worry about that either. Once you receive the card, you may notice that the accounts have automatically linked, and that all cards show up under your main Membership Rewards profile.

In the event that isn’t the case, you’ll want to manually unlink and then link your account again. Log into the online account associated with your Blue Business Plus Credit Card, and select “Account Services.”

Then click on “Card Management,” and then select “Remove Card from Online Management.”

Once the card is removed from that account, log into the online account where you want the card to be, and go through the same process, except click “Register a New Card” at the end. That should do the trick.

Bottom line

When you get the new Blue Business Plus Credit Card, you’ll want to be sure you link your card to the same online account as your other Membership Rewards cards. This will allow you to pool the points you earn across cards, including The Platinum Card® from American ExpressThe Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, etc.

This is something that absolutely is possible, though there are a variety of reasons people seem to be having issues. One of the above techniques should help solve this problem for most.

  1. I applied yesterday and got got approved but didn’t let me use an existing login (Delta, SPG and Hilton), hence I created a new login. I logged into my new account today and was chatting with an associate, she asked some details and some security questions and finally she was able to merge both the accounts. She even asked me under what login do I want all the cards to appear. IMO the previous account has cards which wouldn’t get me MR s but skymiles and hotel points and hence didn’t let me use existing login

  2. I had many of the issues explained in this article.
    I only previously had the Amex Hilton Surpass card. I applied for the new Blue Business Card and was approved. When applying I logged in with my info I use to access my Hilton Surpass card. The form was pre-filled, I was approved, and I got to the balance transfer page where I made the selection I did not want to transfer a balance. The next page told me I would receive info via email, which I never received. My new Blue Business card was also not visable in my existing account and I never was presented with a page to link them.
    I called Amex and explained I can not view my new card and did not get any info via email (thought very odd). The rep told me I have to wait till I receive the card and then I can view it online and the info will be in the welcome packet, not via email. I had zero confidence in this but didn’t really have any option besides waiting.
    Received the card today, called the number to activate it, went online and it was not visable. I then called Amex and asked the rep how I can obtain access to my card online. I was initially told I have to create a new login by the rep (again having zero confidence – what’s up with Amex reps?). After pushing her, she said she would keep looking into things and kept asking me to check my account. After she kept doing something, the new Blue Business card did finally show in my existing account/login.

    On another note, the “welcome packet” was extremely UNDERwhelming. The card was on a colorful page and a bunch of black/white terms/conditions pages were included in a standard business envelope. I was expecting a little more – I guess expectations were too high.

  3. To me something different happened. After the approval, I created a new login as I did not want to have this card linked to the others. Once I completed the process, after logging in I see my Membership Rewards balance in the welcome page. Evidently the system recognized that I already have MR (with the Platinum) and automatically linked the new card to it. Pretty smooth.

  4. If you just log in to your Amex and then click on the link Lucky provided you dont even need to link your accounts. Plus you dont have to fill out all your info either.

    I was approved right away and got an additional card for my fiance.

    This is going to replace the AMEX Everyday Preferred for us.

  5. Loosely related – will getting the Blue Plus card “unlock” the limited MR points earned with the original Blue card and make them full MR points?

  6. No issue at all. Applied and approved yesterday, got the welcome email with the kink, clicked on Add Card to an Existing Account and everything is good.

  7. Ironically, I had more trouble with my new Delta Gold card than I did with Blue Biz Plus card. Amex tried 3 times to “link” my Delta Gold card to my Skymiles account before they were finally able to. I had to get on the phone with them, and that really isn’t normal. Most of my issues can be resolved via web chat with customer service.

    My Blue BIz Plus wanted me to create a new account (since I didn’t select the balance transfer option). I just ignored that and waited for the card to arrive. I applied last friday, card arrived on Monday via UPS. Yeah, the presentation was underwhelming. That’s okay, I don’t want them spending money on this no annual fee card. I want Amex to keep the benefits of it high.

    Anyhow, when the card arrived, I just activated it in my Amex account. All was good.

  8. Can anyone confirm that this card and the MR points that come with it CAN be transferred to airline miles? Or is it just cashback MR points?

  9. @tiffany – Thanks, but have you seen it personally or you’re assuming it based on the amex press release?

    I only ask because I’ve seen reports where there is no option to make a transfer.
