Check Out This Video Of “The Jewel,” Singapore Changi Airport’s Insane New Mall

Singapore Changi is my favorite airport in the world, and typically also tops just about any list for best airports. The airport is more like a big shopping mall that just happens to have gates attached to it. I love the amenities it has, ranging from a swimming pool to a gym to a movie theater to a butterfly garden. What’s not to love?

However, as I first wrote about in 2013, the airport will soon get even more incredible. That’s because in the next couple of years they’ll be opening a mixed-use complex at Changi Airport, called the Jewel.

Yes, this isn’t only for passengers, but you can expect the airport to become even more of a destination for locals. While I had seen renderings before, a video was just released showcasing this new complex, and it looks insane. This looks like the Marina Bay Sands mall on steroids.

Here’s the video:

The Straits Times reports that the new complex is scheduled to open in 2019, and will feature a 40 meter indoor waterfall, a five story garden, 2,500 trees and 100,000 shrubs, and of course tons of shopping, dining, entertainment, etc.

The Jewel will be connected directly to Terminal 1, and will also have bridges connecting it to Changi Airport’s other terminals.

I can’t wait to see this in person! It’s amazing how this airport keeps outdoing itself.

  1. Singapore is small and knows to leverage its airport to boost its image and success. Now that China has decided to help build a new seaport outside Malacca in Malaysia, Singapore’s strategic eminence as the only seaport on the all important Malacca Strait will be diminished. Its GDP will suffer. The new facility will cement Singapore as a top tourist attraction and to cushion possible economic downturn.

  2. It’s a shame, the airport was one of the only few things I liked about Singapore when I went….

  3. When PIT opened in the early 90s they built it like this (not this grand but same idea) and local people did shop there. But clearly that doesn’t work anymore with how the security is set up (pre-9/11 they changed it to require you to have a ticket to get through security). Shame, it was really nice. Now it’s mostly empty with USAirways moving its hub away.

  4. I travel through this airport on 2/30 round trips per year. This has to be the most over rated airport in the world. Security at the gate is 1970 esque. The place is nothing more than an average shopping mall with no soul – so many better airports globally.

  5. @Henry: please explain. What airport for you has soul? Malpenza? And to what extend does an airport require to have said aforementioned soul? I’m intrigued.

  6. Planning a trip in 2018 or 2019 specifically to see the airport. Sorry Henry but you are in the minority when it comes to your opinion of this airport. I have read numerous blogs praising the place and it is consistently rated as one of the top airports in the world.
