Update: The special welcome offer for the The Blue Business℠ Plus Credit Card from American Express has expired, but you can learn more about best available offers here.
American Express has just introduced their newest credit card, The Blue BusinessSM Plus Credit Card. This credit card actually replaces The Blue for Business Credit Card, which I picked up earlier this year. However, I don’t believe existing cardmembers will automatically be converted, though there may be an opportunity to product change from another card to this, should you so desire.
The new Blue Business Plus Credit Card has no annual fee, and offers a sign-up bonus of 20,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $3,000 within the first three months of card membership. For a no annual fee card, I’d say that’s pretty solid — it’s also marketed as a “special offer,” so I wouldn’t necessarily expect that it will stick around, and certainly wouldn’t expect that we’ll see a bigger bonus anytime soon.
This card is fairly straightforward, though there’s something that makes it really awesome — you earn 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 you spend on the card per calendar year (and then one point per dollar thereafter). Earning two Membership Rewards points per dollar spent in non-bonused categories with a no annual fee card is really great.
For example, you can pay taxes by credit card (including business taxes) for a fee of ~1.9%, so this would be an opportunity to pick up Membership Rewards points for under a penny each. This would definitely be my go to card for spend in non-bonused categories.
There are definitely better business cards for specific categories of spend, like the The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN and Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. However, for non-bonused spend, this new card is tough to beat.
The one thing I’m not sure of is whether you’d be eligible for the sign-up bonus on this card if you’ve had The Blue for Business Credit Card in the past. The terms for the Blue Business Plus Credit Card state that the “welcome bonus offer [is] not available to applicants who have or have had this product.” So I’d think that those who had the Blue for Business Card would be eligible, since this seems like a different product, but I’m seeking clarity on this at the moment, just to be on the safe side.
I’d argue that the new Blue Business Plus Credit Card is the most lucrative business card for the first $50,000 of non-bonused spend per year. Heck, it might be the most lucrative card for the first $50,000 of spend per year across the board, whether we’re talking about business or personal cards. On top of that, this card has no annual fee, so it should be easy to get value out of it, especially as these points can be pooled with your other Amex points. Anecdotally I find that Amex small business cards are pretty easy to get approved for, and this should be no exception.
What do you make of the new Amex Blue Business Plus Card?
