United Extends Hertz Promo, Makes Huge Targeted Offer

United has been running a really good promotion for renting cars with Hertz for quite a while. In fact, I’d say it’s the most lucrative offer out there for short term car rentals, since Premier 1K and Global Services members can earn 2,750 miles per rental. Even for non-elite members, it’s still 2,000 miles per rental.

I’ve done it a bunch of times now and the miles always post, even if it takes a bit. Sure, you might end up with a crappy Hertz vehicle, but for the miles, I’ll take it.

Come to think of it, doesn’t it seem like you should earn the number of miles that are on the odometer at the time you pick up the car? For some of the cars Hertz has given me, I’d make out like a bandit!

Anyway, the promotion was scheduled to run out at the end of May. But in a move which should surprise no one, the offer has now been extended through September 30, 2017.

Earn United miles on Hertz car rentals

The standard promotional offer is for a 1,500 mile bonus for renting a car from Hertz. Then, depending on your status, you earn additional miles according to the table.

As a United 1K, that means you can earn 2,750 miles for a one-day rental. And 2,500 miles for Silver or Gold members is nearly as good.

But at least some members have been targeted for an offer that is worth twice as much.

United’s targeted “mega” Hertz offer

A friend of mine sent me this email that he received from United.

Whoa!

Earning 5,750 miles per rental is incredible. That’s even better than the SAS offer earlier this year. And unlike that offer, I trust they’ll actually honor this one. Due note however, that the “mega” version only runs through September 9th, while the standard one goes through September 30th. (And will presumably be extended.)

Using Ben’s valuation of United miles at 1.4 cents each, that’s over $80 of value for each rental.

Booking Hertz cars via the United website

To take advantage of the standard or the “mega” Hertz offer, you need to book via the United website using the following codes:

  • CDP 62455
  • PC 305023

If you follow the banner links on the United website, these codes should be pre-populated.

The car rental reservation should eventually show up with your airline tickets in the My Reservations section of your united.com account.

Bottom line

Even though I prefer to rent from National where I can pick my car from the aisle at most locations, I’ve been giving my short terms rentals to Hertz due to the amount of miles I can earn. If you have United status or even just the credit card, this is probably the best car rental deal out there.

And if you were lucky enough to get targeted for the “mega” promotion, you might even want to think about some “car-runs”….

Were you targeted for this United MileagePlus offer through Hertz?

(Tip of the hat to Chris)

  1. My company makes me use National/Enterprise 🙁
Oh well at least they have new vehicles. I haven’t had a car with more than 5,000 miles in the last 20 rentals this year 🙂

  2. “MileagePlus members can also earn miles when renting a car with Dollar and Thrifty”

  3. Also, it isn’t clear that the rental must be booked through United to qualify for the 3k bonus (though your interpretation is likely correct).

T&Cs state: “*Base rate includes time and mileage charges only. Taxes, tax reimbursement, age differential charges, fees, surcharges and optional service charges, such as refueling, are not included. Reservation must be for a mid-size or larger car and include CDP 62455, PC 305023 and be booked through united.com to qualify for 1,500 bonus miles. Extra 3,000-mile bonus per rental only available to recipients of this email. Rentals must be picked up by September 9, 2017, to earn the 3,000-mile bonus, and by September 30, 2017 to earn the 1,500-mile bonus.”

  4. Found this email in my deleted folder. Glad that I check. It does not have minimum days requirements just that the car needs to be mid size or larger. Now to find a cheap hertz location and book dozens of cars.

  5. ncsam — I think I’ve seen most of mine post in 7-10 days. But they usually show up in different tranches, so don’t worry if you don’t get them all at once.

  6. Question–If I book four one-day rentals over a period of four days will that translate to 20,000 miles? I will be renting a car in June and staying at an airport hotel. I am perfectly fine with returning a car each day of my stay since the rental return is literally one mile from the hotel. There doesn’t seem to be anything in the rules to prevent this. This offer is very good–I don’t think I can beat it, but could alternate dates with another car rental.

  7. GR Downtown — I’ve not done it, but I think you can have back-to-back rentals.

Just make sure you are targeted for the 5k though.

  8. If you’re going for this promo, expect a long drawn-out battle to get the points.

After 3 bookings from the United promo page Hertz has NEVER credited me the extra points. United points the finger at Hertz, and Hertz points the finger at United, if you can get hold of anyone at Hertz that is).

  9. So did anyone get the miles for the SAS PROMO?? Haven’t received the miles even though I made and finished reservations before they changed the terms

  10. +1 to Christian’s question. Anyone know if I can rent a car, drive it around the block, return it, and still get the points?

  11. Just wanted to add a data point. Had a 24-hour weekend rental on 6/3, 500 + 1500 points posted after about five days, and 3000 points posted after about ten.
