One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards.
FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.
Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the promotion somewhat since then, and the discounts are now pretty consistently for 25% off. That’s still good, just not as good.
FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards, valid for bookings made between April 1 and April 30, 2017, and for travel between June 1 and July 31, 2017. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but this list is pretty short for North America, given that it’s for travel over peak summer dates. There are just two Promo Awards for travel originating in North America this time:
- Boston to Europe in Air France business class
- Mexico City to Europe in Air France business class
With these discounts you’ll be paying 46,875 miles one-way in business class, rather than the usual price of 62,500 miles. On the plus side, some of the flights between Boston and Paris are operated by 777s that feature Air France’s great new business class. Just make sure you select a flight that has four seats per row in business class, because not all 777s feature the new product.
With any of these awards, you can include connections to other points in Europe (including Israel) from Paris or Amsterdam at no additional cost, though you can’t include domestic segments on Delta or Alaska to position within North America.
All saver level space on Air France and KLM in the above markets is eligible for the discounted costs, and these awards are bookable directly on the FlyingBlue website. Availability on these routes is excellent, and as of tomorrow you should see that all saver award space reflects that pricing.
As always, there are plenty of routes outside of North America eligible for Promo Awards as well, so be sure to take a look at the whole list. Many of those may represent more interesting deals, especially given that the Chicago to Paris flight is operated by a plane with angled business class seats.
As a reminder, FlyingBlue is transfer partners with Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou, meaning you can transfer points earned from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, Citi Prestige® Card, Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express, Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card, The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express, etc.
You can hold your award ticket prior to transferring points by calling the FlyingBlue call center.
Promo Awards are always worth checking out. The list for April awards isn’t too exciting, especially if you’re someone who likes the economy awards, given what a good value they are when bookable as Promo Awards. Generally you’ll find the best Promo Awards during off-peak times, like in winter.
Lastly, keep in mind that the March Promo Awards are bookable through today, and that list includes business class travel to/from Chicago, Mexico City, and Cancun.
Is anyone considering one of the Promo Awards on the April list?
