American AAdvantage Is Offering Bonus Miles For Flights To Asia

American has just announced a promotion offering bonus miles for travel to Asia, which is very similar to a promotion they offered last fall. It’s better than nothing, but also certainly not lucrative enough to switch any business to American.

Through this promotion you can earn up to 30,000 bonus miles after two roundtrip flights, depending on your fare class. Here are the basic details:

  • Registration is required between March 30 and May 31, 2017, using promotion code ASM17
  • Valid for flights booked and taken between March 30 and May 31, 2017
  • Valid for nonstop travel to Beijing, Hong Kong, Osaka, Shanghai, Tokyo Haneda, and Tokyo Narita, on American marketed flights operated by either American or Japan Airlines

The number of bonus miles you earn is dependent on the type of fare you book, as follows:

As you can see, a roundtrip first class ticket earns 15,000 bonus miles, a roundtrip business class ticket earns 8,000 bonus miles, a roundtrip full fare economy ticket earns 5,000 miles, and then select discounted economy tickets earn 2,500 bonus miles.

Those select discount economy tickets includes fares booked in H, K, M, L, V, G, Q, N, O, or S, which should cover a vast majority of fares.

Here are the full terms of the promotion:

AAdvantage® bonus mileage offer is only valid for travel on American Airlines marketed nonstop flights (operated by either American Airlines or Japan Airlines) between Los Angeles (LAX) and Shanghai (PVG), Hong Kong (HKG), Tokyo Narita (NRT), Tokyo Haneda (HND) or Osaka (KIX); Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Beijing (PEK) or Shanghai (PVG); Chicago (ORD) and Beijing (PEK) or Shanghai (PVG); New York Kennedy (JFK) and Tokyo Narita (NRT). Flights marketed and or operated by other codeshare partners are not eligible for this promotion.

Offer applies only to AAdvantage® members who receive an email from American Airlines and register, purchase and fly on eligible published-fare tickets between March 30, 2017, and May 31, 2017. Tickets purchased before March 30, 2017 or after May 31, 2017 are not eligible to earn bonus miles for this promotion.

Includes First Class fares booked in F or A; Business Class fares booked in J, R, D or I; Full-Fare or Premium Economy Class fares booked in Y or W; Select Economy Class fares booked in H, K, M, L, V, G, Q, N, O or S on American marketed flights.

Bonus miles will be calculated and awarded based on the booking class purchased and the number of trips taken in a specific cabin. Bonus miles can only be earned for a maximum of 2 round trips and half the round-trip bonus will be posted after each eligible one-way segment. Bonus miles do not count toward elite status qualification or AAdvantage® Million Miler status. Registration prior to travel is required using Promotion Code ASM17 at www.aa.com/offers.

Bottom line

If you’re flying American to Asia anyway then you might as well register for the promotion, though it’s certainly not a reason to switch any flights to American. Earnings rates for a vast majority of passengers flying to Asia have been hugely cut as of last year, when American switched from a mileage based to a revenue based program.

Will you benefit from American’s promotion offering bonus miles on flights to Asia?

  1. Is this targeted? I tried registering (EXP with several asia trips a year), but it said I’m not eligible

  2. Promotion code We’re sorry but the AAdvantage account you entered isn’t eligible for this promotion. Please read the promotion rules for details on qualifying.

    As an EXP this sucks!

@Ben, did you get an email or just notices it in the offers?

  5. Hmmm, sorry about that guys, very strange. I got an email about the offer and managed to register without issue. I’m always careful when I post about these offers to be sure they’re not targeted, and there’s nothing in the terms suggesting that it is. Maybe this offer will go live shortly for everyone?

  6. @Ben, from the terms you posted, it says, “Offer applies only to AAdvantage® members who receive an email from American Airlines…”

Perhaps amend the post to mention that it’s targeted?

  7. I’m an LAX based EXP and I was able to register successfully for the promo at 9:00 PM pacific time. So looks to be still active.
