Two of Amex’s best credit cards for maximizing everyday spend are The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express and The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express. These cards are both extremely rewarding, both for non-bonused spend, and also for specific category bonuses.
For those of you not familiar with these cards, the Amex EveryDay Card:
- Offers 2x points at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $6,000 of spend per calendar year
- Offers a 20% points bonus when you make at least 20 transactions per billing cycle
- Has a $0 annual fee
- Offers 3x points at U.S. supermarkets, on up to $6,000 of spend per calendar year
- Offers 2x points at U.S. gas stations
- Offers a 50% points bonus when you make at least 30 transactions per billing cycle
- Has a $95 annual fee
Keep in mind that the 20-50% points bonus applies even to bonus categories. That means that if you make at least 30 transactions per billing cycle on the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card you’re earning 4.5x points at grocery stores and 3x points at gas stations, which is huge.
If you’re not a huge credit card spender then the no annual fee Amex EveryDay Card is probably a better option for you, while if you are a big card spender (at least in the bonus categories), the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card is the better option; I have the latter card, personally.
With that in mind, I figured it would make sense to explain how to tell if you’re maximizing the two big bonuses offered on either of these cards:
How to tell if you make 20/30 transactions per billing cycle
It’s super easy to track if you’ve made the required 20 transactions on the Amex EveryDay Card, or the required 30 transactions on the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card. To do so, just log into your card account on the American Express website, and on the right you’ll see a counter that shows your progress towards the required transactions.
If you want, you can click on the number of transactions, and it will bring up a page showing the exact purchases that have qualified with each billing cycle.
My statement just closed, but this page also lets you easily see whether you earned the bonus on past statements.
That’s easy enough to track. What’s tougher to track is your progress towards the $6,000 limit on U.S. grocery store purchases.
Tracking your progress towards reaching the $6,000 grocery store limit
Arguably the best bonus category on these cards is the bonus points offered on U.S. grocery store spend. If you’re making the required 20 and 30 transactions on the Amex EveryDay Card and Amex EveryDay Preferred Card, respectively, then you’re earning up to 3x points and 4.5x points on U.S. grocery store purchases.
But how do you track how close you are to the $6,000 calendar year limit on grocery spend? It’s quite easy to do. Once you’re on your account homepage, click on “Recent Activity.”
On that next page you’ll be given the option of sorting purchases over a period of time. Since the $6,000 limit is on a calendar year basis, choose January 1 as the starting date, and the current date as the end date.
Once you hit “Go,” you’ll be brought to a page showing a breakdown of your spend. On that page, click on “Merchandise & Supplies.”
Once you do that, you’ll see a further breakdown. Next to “Groceries” you should see the amount you’ve spent on groceries up until this point listed.
This is an easy way to track your progress towards the $6,000 of spend per calendar year. Once you achieve the $6,000 of spend, I’d recommend using a different credit card for grocery store purchases. For example, the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express offers 6% cashback at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 of spend per calendar year, so could be a great complement.
The Amex EveryDay Preferred Card is one of my favorite cards for maximizing everyday spend. While it’s easy enough to track how many transactions you have towards the 30 required transactions per billing cycle, calculating your progress towards the calendar year grocery store limit can be trickier. So hopefully the above is useful for anyone who was confused about how to see your progress towards the bonus limit on grocery store spend.
