Last Chance: Register To Earn 5x Points On Uber, Lyft, Gas Stations, Etc.

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

The Chase Freedom is one of my favorite no annual fee credit cards, as it offers 5x points in rotating quarterly categories, for up to $1,500 of spend per quarter. Most people use this as a cashback card, meaning the 5x points really translates into 5% cashback in these categories.

The best part is that in conjunction with cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, points earned on this card can be converted into “premium” Ultimate Rewards points, and be transferred to the Ultimate Rewards airline and hotel partners. Since I value one Ultimate Rewards point at significantly more than one cent, that’s my preferred use of those points.

Last chance to register for 5x points at gas stations, Uber, Lyft, etc.

From January 1 through March 31, 2017, Chase is offering 5x points on gas stations and local commuter transportation.

While you can continue to earn 5x points through March 31, registration for this quarter’s bonus category closes tomorrow, Tuesday March, 14, 2017.

Registration is easy — just go to the registration page and enter your last name, billing zip code, and the last four digits on your card, and you’ll be registered.

In case you’re wondering what specifically qualifies under the above categories, here’s how Chase explains them:

  • “Gas stations” does not include merchants that do not specialize in selling automotive gasoline, including truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies
  • “Local commuter transportation” includes taxis, subways, local commuter buses and trains, and does not include parking, tolls, and Amtrak purchases; it’s also worth noting that it does include services like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar

As you can see, ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft are included this quarter, which is how I’m guessing most people will be max out the bonus this quarter.

How to make Chase Freedom points even more valuable

Just to recap, you earn points on the Chase Freedom, and each point can be redeemed for one cent cashback.

However, if you have this card in addition to one of the cards that accrues “premium” Ultimate Rewards points, you can transfer these points to Ultimate Rewards. Cards that accrue “premium” Ultimate Rewards Cards include the:

So 5% cashback converts into 5x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar with one of the above cards.

Bottom line

The Chase Freedom is one of the best no annual fee cards out there, and I do everything I can to max out the 5x points category every quarter. If you haven’t yet registered for the first quarter 5x points category, you only have a day left to do so. Then starting on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, you’ll be able to register for 5x points on grocery stores and drugstores, for purchases between April 1 and June 30, 2017.

You can check your status towards maxing out the bonus category for this quarter by logging into your Ultimate Rewards account, selecting the Chase Freedom, and then on the left you should see a progress bar. For example, I’m most of the way there, but haven’t quite maxed it out:
