Yesterday I wrote about the increased sign-up bonuses on the Starwood American Express, which is the biggest bonus we’ve ever seen on the card. The details of the offer are as follows:
- For the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express, earn 25,000 Starpoints after spending $3,000 within three months, plus an additional 10,000 Starpoints after spending another $2,000 within six months; $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95
- For the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, earn 25,000 Starpoints after spending $5,000 within three months, plus an additional 10,000 Starpoints after spending another $3,000 within six months; $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $95
The standard sign-up bonus offers up to 25,000 bonus Starpoints, while historically they’ve had a promotion once a year offering up to 30,000 bonus Starpoints. So this is a further 5,000 Starpoints above the best offer we previously ever saw.
This is a fantastic bonus which anyone who is able to should take advantage of, especially with the merger between Starwood and Marriott, which leaves some uncertainty about the future of the card. You should take advantage of the sign-up bonus and great perks offered by the card as long as we know for sure that it’s around.
My favorite perks of the card include that the SPG Business Amex comes with club lounge access at Sheraton properties, and that each card offers two elite qualifying stays and five elite qualifying nights towards SPG status annually. Since I have both cards, I start each year with four elite qualifying stays and 10 elite qualifying nights towards status.
With that in mind, I should also note that if you have the SPG Amex already, you can actually earn bonus points by referring friends to the card.
American Express offers 5,000 bonus Starpoints for each friend you refer to the SPG Personal Amex or SPG Business Amex, up to 55,000 bonus Starpoints per card. That means you can potentially refer 11 people to each card, for a total of 110,000 bonus Starpoints:
- Here’s the link to refer someone to the SPG Personal Amex
- Here’s the link to refer someone to the SPG Business Amex
To refer someone simply follow the link above, and then enter your friend’s name and email address, and they’ll receive an email from Amex with a link to apply.
Your friend must be referred and approved by April 5, 2017 to be eligible. If they’re approved, you should receive your bonus Starpoints 6-8 weeks after the person you referred is approved.
It’s nice to be able to earn an extra 5,000 bonus Starpoints for referring people to either the SPG Personal Amex or SPG Business Amex. You can even refer a spouse, or someone who is currently an authorized user on the card, but doesn’t have their own.
The sign-up bonus on the card is fantastic and everyone who is eligible should try to take advantage of it, in my opinion.

Why we like this card: Starpoints are incredible versatile, and are probably my favorite all-around flexible points currency. The four stay credits and 10 night credits towards status with Starwood annually for having both cards (personal and business) are also invaluable to me. Terms & Conditions Apply.
