I’m spending a few days in Mexico, and perhaps shockingly, it’s my first time visiting here as an adult (other than connecting through Mexico City Airport). This has made me reflect on my travels in a surprising way, so I’ll have a separate post about that. In the past I’ve always traveled halfway around the world to relax, so this has been an interesting contrast to that.
On the travel and points front, we’ve seen quite a few updates this week, including more information on American’s basic economy fares, Starwood and Uber devaluing their partnership, as well as some great promos.
With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:
I travel differently than most — for me travel is more about the journey than the destination, as I’ve explained in a previous post. However, that’s a function of “my job” (if I can even call it that) and the niche I’ve carved out, and that I simply think there’s more value I can add talking about airlines and hotels than destinations.
That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy seeing new places, as I absolutely do. I often don’t get to visit places for as long as I’d like to, but I’ve made an effort to see as many places as practical in 2016.
2016 was a great travel for year for me, especially as I got to take some unforgettable trips with Ford.
In 2016 my goal was to review as many new airlines as possible, and that’s something I want to continue into 2017. So I figured I might as well get my year off to a good start, and plan a heck of a trip for the first week of the year.
The primary motivation of this trip was to review as many new airlines as quickly as possible, though I was also excited about having stopovers that allowed me to briefly visit two countries — Jordan and Brunei — for the first time.
I only planned this trip in late December, about a week before I was due to takeoff. Let’s briefly look at the planning process.
The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN are among the most popular premium cards out there.
They each have a high annual fee ($550 for the Personal Platinum, $450 for the Business Platinum), though in my opinion the benefits more than offset that.
The main reason I have these cards is because of the great perks they offer. However, if you’re a new cardmember it can be tough to navigate all these perks.
