20% Off Airbnb Gift Cards

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for purchases made through some of the below links. These are products and services we use ourselves, and are the best offers we know of. Check out our Advertising Policy for further details. Thanks for your support!

While the focus at OMAAT will always be on hotels where you can earn and use points, there are times when chain hotels aren’t available, or alternative accommodations make more sense. Airbnb can bridge that gap nicely — we had great stays in London and Thailand last year, and I’ll be using Airbnb during my New Years trip to Jordan.

If you have any upcoming Airbnb stays, here’s a great opportunity to save 20% on your trip.

Gift Card Mall is offering a discount on several eGift cards, including 20% off Airbnb. The discount is automatically reflected at checkout, so it’s pretty straightforward.

Buying discounted Airbnb gift cards

Just go the promotions page for Gift Card Mall, then choose Airbnb from the list of available eGift cards:

Choose the denomination of your gift card, up to $500:

The 20% discount is automatically reflected at checkout:

The gift card and PIN will be emailed directly to your recipient.

Redeeming airbnb gift cards

To redeem your gift card, login to your Airbnb account, then choose “Gift Cards” from the drop-down menu under your profile picture:

From there click “Redeem a gift card” and enter the number that was emailed to you.

Be aware

Dr. of Credit mentions that Gift Card Mall has canceled orders for no reason in the past.

If this is a deal that appeals to you, I would place your order sooner rather than later. Once you have the eGift card number it shouldn’t matter when you redeem it, but if you’re nervous about these things you can of course apply it to your account right away.

Bottom line

Getting 20% off is almost always a no-brainer, and while supplies are limited there aren’t any other major caveats. I was able to check out and immediately apply the gift card to my airbnb account, and it was all pretty straightforward.

If you don’t already have an account with Airbnb, you can receive a $20 credit when you sign up as a new user. We receive a credit as well, which we of course appreciate. Feel free to share your links if you’re a current user!

Anyone have any fun trips planned with Airbnb?

  1. For the record, AirBNB will not allow you to use gift cards for long (28 days+) reservation. It’s a really shitty rule that’s worth knowing if you plan to spend a summer somewhere

  2. Doesn’t work. It keeps saying something went wrong. Tried 5 times and have 5 $800 pre-auths. Hopefully they fall off, since it seems something didn’t work.

  3. @ Buck — I don’t believe so, but my reservations have always exceeded my gift card balance, so I’m not 100% sure. They don’t expire though.

  4. Im getting the same issue from their webite telling me my card provider is declining. I called Barclay and they said that Gift Card Mall is accepting my card and then crediting back.

  5. Ok apparently it seems like Mastercard is not working because I used my Chase Sapphire card and it worked.

  6. Wish I saw this yesterday! Just spent $650 for a reservation. I hate it though that Airbnb enforced an FX conversion charge on my booking. It added an extra $30 to my booking.

And now, I just remembered that Bank of America is offering a 5% cash back on some of its credit cards if making a booking by 19 Dec… maybe that will help someone else.

  7. Can’t seem to place my order sadly… Keeps saying my credit card info is incorrect. Now, they have two of my account numbers and I still can’t place an order. Oh well

  8. I’ve never used gift card mall before. does you know if the charge shows it is for an airbnb purchase and thus a travel type expense for chase reserve card’s 3x points?

  9. Tried with B of A and Citibank credit cards and both times got this message:This transaction was not completed. The transaction was not submitted correctly, or has been declined by your card issuer. You can try again with a different card or review your payment information for any necessary corrections.

Do they want to sell gift cards or not? Both banks say they didn’t even receive an authorization request

  10. @ alpa — No, the merchant will be listed as Gift Card Mall, as they are the retailer. Same as if you were buying airbnb gift cards at your local grocery store, it would be the grocery store that showed up on your statement.

  11. @Tiffany You guys do such a good job in many ways helping your readers maximize value and avoid unnecessary cost, scams, and other “gotchas.” It’s what keeps us coming back.

But for some reason you haven’t used your power to highlight the Dynamic Currency Conversion scam often enough. The only exception I can recall is Ben’s experience in Queenstown. Airbnb is a major perpetrator by forcing users to accept their foreign exchange “service” as a condition of making a booking. John above points this out: “I hate it though that Airbnb enforced an FX conversion charge on my booking.” This of course is not really a “service” – it’s a pure money grab. Why give AIrbnb a free pass on this?

Also for posts such as this, it would be helpful to have all of the terms included up front. In addition to the 28-day limit mentioned by James K. you must apply the card to your account within 90 days or Airbnb will refund the amount to the purchaser, according to their site.

I hope you find these comments useful. Please keep it coming, Tiffany. You bring a pleasant voice and your posts about travel experiences are a pleasure to read.

  12. Placed order last night, it was approved then canceled overnight.

    Gift Card Mall = Bad

    (harvesting emails and phone numbers?)

  13. How long does it take to receive the cards? I placed the order (and it went through) nearly two hours ago, and have yet to receive any electronic gift cards. I did get a confirmation for the order through email, but am I supposed to receive electronic or physical gift cards?

  14. After 30 minutes on hold, I was told that the e gift cards can take up to72 hours to arrive. I purchased mine last night at 8pm, but the order wasn’t received by them until this morning, so I was told by Thursday morning. Apparently it’s in the FAQ’s on the website. You’d think it could be in the order confirmation email, on the front page of e gift cards, etc…

  15. Worked fine for me via Chase Sapphire Reserve, got coupon within 24 hours, loaded onto airbnb no problem. Thanks.

  16. Thank you for this post, very helpful!
Do you know if multiple AirBnB gift cards can be redeemed for one stay payment?
I see maximum value for each AirBnB gift card is $500. So can I pay for $900 stay with two $500 AirBnB gift cards?

  17. A warning that this takes a while to come through, despite being an e gift card! Customer service is horrendous and said there’s no way to track the progress, and you will have to wait anywhere between 4-72 hours to get the code… if your order isn’t canceled before then.

Be sure to plan ahead if you were going to book something soon. Also, make sure to read the reviews on this company before booking to make sure you are aware of the risks and delay in receiving the codes. It’s been more than 10 hours since I ordered and I don’t have anything yet.

  18. Ordered yesterday and received a confirmation email. But got cancelled this morning don’t know why…

    Terrible service indeed

  19. Strange that so many others are having problems with this.

It worked fine for me. Took about a day for the code to arrive by email, but I was able to apply it to my AirBNB account this afternoon just fine.

    Used an AmEx Gold Business.

So from my perspective — thank you for the great tip, Tiffany, you saved me 4,762 points!

It would have been 71,428 points if I redeemed the $500 using AmEx’s partnership with AirBNB ($0.07 / pt), and this way, I’ll only need 66,666 points (redeeming via “pay for charge”, which is at a $0.06 / pt).

Yes, I realize neither of these avenues is a great redemption use for AmEx points, but I have the points, and I don’t want to pay for our stay out of pocket :-).

    Cheers,

    Robin

  20. Here’s an update from my previous comment:

The order placed through Giftcardmall.com, has been cancelled. Unfortunately the order was not approved by our security screening process, and as a result, the gift card will not be shipped. No funds were collected from your credit or debit card for this order.

We consider online security, which protects both our customers as well as our company, to be a top priority. Our goal is to make our customers smile, which is why we are so sorry to have disappointed you!

  21. My purchase of $2,000 went through two days ago and I was happy…that is until this afternoon when I received the email below:

    What is wrong wth them?

  22. i’m happy to report my process went well. i bought the cards 2 days ago. the i got the gift cards today. i redeemed them a few minutes ago, and they are now sitting safely in my airbnb acct.

thank you, tiffany! and i hope the process works for those of you have had problems.

  23. Early yesterday evening I purchase $900. in Air bnb e gift cards on 3 different e gift cards in one transaction and an hour and a half later purchased another $150. They were all discounted 20%. I put them on my Visa United Plus Explorer card. I was beginning to worry because several hours later I still had received only a confirmation of my purchase. At 2:30 this afternoon I received my $150. E Gift card ( the one which I had purchased last). About 3 hours later I received the other e gift cards. They needed to be inputted through a laptop, kept getting an error code through my I pad (seems to be an air bnb issue).
I was very happy with my experience with Gift Card Mall, ordering through them saved me over $200.

  24. Just wanted to echo the bad experiences others above have had with this company. It seemed like a great idea for a Christmas gift. After much difficulty with their website (“invalid email”, “invalid credit card”) my order finally went through, I saw it pending on amex.com and I received a confirmation email – followed fifteen minutes later by a cancellation email. After being on hold for fifty minutes I got the same song and dance about non-specific security measures rejecting the card (what BS – has anyone ever heard that one?) but that I was welcome to try again. No thanks – not worth the aggravation, especially considering this was for a Christmas gift and their online reputation is terrible. Tiffany, you might want to think twice about recommending this clown train of a business if they offer any travel discounts in the future.
