Review: Chase Ink Business Preferred Card

Early last week Chase formally introduced the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, which is their newest business credit card. Based on the “Preferred” branding, it sure seems intended to be the business version of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

This Ink Preferred replaces the Ink Plus as Chase’s new premium business credit card, though existing cardmembers of the Ink Plus can continue to hold onto that card, as Chase doesn’t have plans to transition cardmembers over.

Tiffany posted about the card when it was first introduced, though I figured I’d do an in-depth review of the card benefits in this post:

Ink Preferred Card sign-up bonus

The Ink Preferred Card is offering a sign-up bonus of 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. These points can be combined with those earned on other Ultimate Rewards cards, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

Ink Preferred Card annual fee

This card has a $95 annual fee, which is similar to what Chase has charged for their premium business credit cards in the past. Furthermore, you can add employee cards at no extra cost.

Ink Preferred Card points earning opportunities

This card offers triple points in the following categories:

  • Travel
  • Shipping purchases
  • Internet, cable and phone services
  • Advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines

You earn triple points on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases in the above categories each account anniversary year (which means they’re not using a January 1 through December 31 calendar, but rather it’s based on when you signed up).

Those are some extremely useful and widespread bonus categories for most businesses. The “travel” category covers all kinds of spend, from flights to hotels to rental cars to parking to ridesharing. A lot of businesses have internet and phone service expenses, so you can earn triple points in those categories as well. If you’re a business that spends a lot on social media or search engine advertising (i.e., Facebook or Google), that could pay off very nicely as well.

I don’t think there’s a more well rounded business card out there in terms of the rewards you’ll get, and this card “only” has a $95 annual fee.

Getting approved for the Ink Preferred Card

The Ink Preferred Card is subject to Chase’s “5/24” rule, meaning that you typically won’t be approved if you’ve opened more than five cards in the past 24 months.

Not only does this card offer a great return on everyday spend, but it also comes with quite a few perks that make this card especially valuable for spend you make with this card:

Ink Preferred Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your card. Coverage is primary when renting for business purposes and provides reimbursement up to the actual cash value of the vehicle for theft and collision damage for most cars in the U.S. and abroad.

Ink Preferred Trip Cancellation / Trip Interruption Insurance

If your trip is cancelled or cut short by sickness, severe weather and other covered situations, you can be reimbursed up to $5,000 per trip for your pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses, including passenger fares, tours, and hotels.

Ink Preferred Purchase Protection

Covers your new purchases for up to 120 days against damage or theft up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

Ink Preferred Extended Warranty Protection

Extends the time period of U.S. manufacturer’s warranty by an additional year, on eligible warranties of three years or less.

Ink Preferred Cell Phone Protection

Get up to $600 per claim in cell phone protection against covered theft or damage for you and your employees listed on your monthly cell phone bill when you pay it with your Chase Ink Business Preferred credit card. Maximum of 3 claims in a 12 month period with a $100 deductible per claim.

Price Protection

If a card purchase you made in the U.S. is advertised for less in print or online within 90 days, you can be reimbursed the difference up to $500 per item, $2,500 per year.

My thoughts on Ink Preferred purchase protection

As you can see, there are a lot of perks here, some of which you’ll find on many cards, and some of which are pretty special. For example, it’s great that the card has collision damage waiver coverage for car rentals, trip cancelation and baggage protection coverage, etc.

However, some of the other benefits are special, like the cell phone protection. You can get up to $600 per claim if your cell phone is stolen or damaged, with just a $100 deductible. This would certainly cause me to put a cell phone purchase on this card, since we know how easy it is to damage a cell phone nowadays.

Bottom line

Some people will prefer the Ink Plus because it offered 5x points in select categories. However, I think most will agree that the new card is much more well rounded, and one of the best business cards in the market. Triple points in a variety of categories that many businesses spend a lot in, plus industry leading purchase protection and insurance, plus a big sign-up bonus of 80,000 points, makes the Ink Preferred Card very compelling.

    A great pairing with this card is the Ink Cash, which happens to have no annual fee and will balance out those great spending categories you speak of above. The best category is probably the office supply 5 x category. While this Ink Cash cannot transfer directly to partners, having the above card will allow you to move the Ink Cash points to that card and then out to partners.

    Can you clarify whether it’s the phone purchase that needs to be on the card or just the monthly cell phone bill. I read it as the bill, you seemed to indicate that it’s the phone purchase.

  3. Worth it just for the sign up bonus? I have the Sapphire Preferred that I use for regular monthly spend. This would just be for the bonus, then cancel when the next annual fee is due…

  4. My issue is Chase website. My access to website is routinely denied because they deactivate my account at random times. It takes hours of my time to get through to the right people to fix their repeatedly errors. They must have a virus in their system, or employees with a grudge are targeting mine an other accounts. I can go days without access. You need to factor their tech problems into your decision about having a credit card relationship. I have never had a problem elsewhere, but Chase has awful tech bugs and customer service.

  5. Sorry I love had @ least 12 cards over the last 5 years with 6 at one time .But AMEX and Delta I’ll have again and are no good .Delta I spent more time on the phone then the flt they changed 4X and the HEAVY India accent @ customer service . I got the new card too !!!!
