SNL Spoofs Captain Sully In Hilarious Skit

SNL Spoofs Captain Sully In Hilarious Skit

20

Perhaps thanks to the election cycle SNL has been funny lately, which is the first time in a while I’ve felt that way. Last night’s SNL had a skit that aviation geeks will appreciate. The skit is about Sully Sullenberger, and specifically about him going back to being an airline pilot. In the skit he find out that he needs to fly as first officer rather than captain, given that he has been gone for so long, and he’s not really okay with that.

Sully is played by Tom Hanks (as is the case in the movie), while the flight’s captain is played by Alec Baldwin.

Here’s the hilarious clip:

While I thought it was funny, I also couldn’t help but notice all the inaccuracies. I get that this was a spoof and that accuracy isn’t the priority, but that didn’t stop me from noticing things. Specifically:

  • They showed a different plane for boarding, take off, and in the air
  • There’s a cockpit visitor during the flight, which is a big no-no
  • The captain calls the tower to check who is scheduled as the pilot
  • This whole thing almost feels like an American advertisement, given the number of times they show the plane

Did I miss anything?

Regardless, I thought this was hilarious.

    @ Diane...
All politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, are crooks and have accepted favors from various interests and companies. If you actually fact check their statements, Donald has lied and deceived the American public more than any other politician. His "gaslighting" is tricking the public. It was an OK skit..."hilarious" would not be how I'd describe it.

Baldwin wouldn't be on American. After his Words with Friends incident he said "Last flight w American. Where retired Catholic school gym teachers from the 1950's find jobs as flight attendants."

The flight attendant would have know who is the captain of this flight because she would have briefed with him beforehand.
Also, pretty sure that the radio and intercom work without one having to press against one's ear. I understand it was done for entertainment purposes but it really annoyed me.

SNL is mean these days. Except to Hillary Clinton, they adore that crook.

ROTFL! I watched and enjoyed this skit but was also telling my wife everything they got wrong!!!

    Why I love this blog :) :) :)

@Rick-I didn't think that was mean. It was clearly a joke.

Beyond that, Tom Hanks is not a mean person, and I assume that he knows Sully, and wouldn't have done it if Sully would've been offended.

The plane they show at the gate is a united 737 with the American brand superimposed over united. That was the most frustrating thing I saw.

Norm Macdonald made a funnier Sully spoof on Conan.

Agree with Dan, partly. Not funny. But Alec Baldwins Trump is :-)
On the other hand, I never understood the OVERLY hype about Cpt. Sullenberger.
He is a Pilot. It's his job, he trained for, and practised for years. He did his job. Not more, not less. Granted, expertly, but in the end, every Nurse, PoliceOfficer, Firefighter, schoolteacher do/does their job every day, equally challenging and for some equally dangerous.

What the heck did Sully do to deserve that kind of abuse? More mean than funny.

Well, the AMERICAN Airlines A320 at 3:06 has a British registration...

Lucky, I think you are awesome and your blog is fantastic, but you are sorely mistaken here. This isn't even remotely funny. I'm an easy laugh, and I didn't laugh once. I miss the old days of SNL.

Also, Alec Baldwin is a great actor and I love his movies, but his Trump is awful – he doesn't sound anything like him. Impressions are definitely not his strong suit.

Check out this guy, John Didomenico....

Oh yah Flying to a delta airlines hub.

That's an American Airlines plane in a united airlines livery spoofing a US Airways accident. Just from the very first second of the video.

  17. Donna Diamond

Alex Baldwin - outstanding in both roles last night as well.

I didn't see anyone at the navigator station.

One more inaccuracy: AA name and logo over UACO colors

Tom Hanks is so versatile -- a pleasure to watch -- he did a great job in the rest of the show as well -- as Chris Wallace in the cold open and as Doug the redneck in the Jeopardy game.
