Since late September, the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express has been offering a different sign-up bonus than usual. While the card ordinarily offers a sign-up bonus of 25,000 Starpoints upon completing minimum spend, until tomorrow there’s a version offering free nights rather than Starpoints.

Specifically, the card is offering two free nights at any Category 1-5 SPG property after spending $5,000 in purchases within the first three months. If you have been considering this offer, you have less than 24 hours left to apply under these terms.

However, in general I’d prefer the bonus of 25,000 Starpoints rather than the two free nights. That’s because what makes Starpoints so valuable is how flexible they are, and you lose that flexibility with the limited time offer.

Category 5 properties go for 12,000-16,000 Starpoints per night (depending on the season), meaning this bonus is worth at most 24,000-32,000 Starpoints.

In theory you can come out ahead under this offer if you stay at a Category 5 hotel in peak season. For example, earlier in the year I stayed at the W St. Petersburg, which is a Category 5 property, and in summer it has peak season pricing.

However, in the grand scheme of things you’re severely limiting the flexibility of your points by doing so, especially now that you can freely convert points between Starwood and Marriott.

For what it’s worth, the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express doesn’t have that different bonus, and continues to offer 25,000 bonus Starpoints after you make $3,000 in purchases within the first three months. There’s also a link to the SPG Business Amex that continues to offer the old 25,000 Starpoint sign-up bonus.

I suspect tomorrow the bonus on this card will go back to 25,000 Starpoints, though it’s anyone’s guess. Since Amex small business card sign-up bonuses have been much bigger than usual lately, maybe we’ll see something even better. For example, we’re seeing the following Amex small business offers right now:

Has anyone signed up for the SPG Business Amex under the current offer?

  1. Lucky, the personal SPG AmEx also is offering the two free nights rather than the 25,000 Starpoints and has for a while now. There are some links that will still give you the old bonus but I haven’t seen one in a while. The one you’ll find by going through AmEx’s website as well as the link you have in this post both lead me to the version with 2 free nights.

  2. SPG cards ( both personal and business) are giving sign-up bonus points ” once in a lifetime”, right? Or it only applies to business card? Does it apply to free nights? Let’s say – you got points bonus two years ago; can you get “free nights” bonus now ?
