Over $200 Back With August Amex Offers

For those of you not familiar with Amex Offers, it’s a program available through most Amex cards, where different cards are eligible for different savings offers. In many cases the savings can be huge, and more than offset the annual fee on a card.

To view Amex Offers, go to the bottom of the account summary page of any American Express card, where you’ll see all the offers you’re eligible for. Most of these offers are for a discount when you spend a certain amount with a retailer, and registration is required. Over the past year I’ve saved over a thousand dollars using Amex Offers, and the August offers alone will rebate me ~$200 on each of my Amex cards.

New offers were just loaded for August, and there are a few travel-related offers that I think look interesting.

Sheraton Hotels | Spend $250 or more, get $50 back

This offer is straightforward, but it’s worth noting that the statement credit will only be triggered by stays at Sheraton branded hotels, and not other SPG properties. Furthermore, the stay has to be at a US property.

I mostly find myself at airport Sheratons, and can’t remember the last time I spent $250 on a stay, but added this offer to every eligible card just in case.

The Ritz-Carlton | Spend $500 or more, get $100 back

The offer for Ritz-Carlton requires a higher spend, but also gives a higher credit. In order to maximize this offer, I’ll be looking for a Ritz-Carlton that also participates in American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts.

When I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey, for example, I received:

  • Noon check-in, when available
  • Guaranteed 4PM check-out
  • Room upgrade upon availability
  • Daily breakfast for two people
  • In-room wifi
  • A $100 food & beverage credit to be used during the stay

In effect, stacking these offers would bring a $500 hotel stay down to $300 — or less if you count the value of breakfast, the upgrade, wifi, etc.

Hilton | Spend $200 or more, get 3,000 Membership Rewards points

The Hilton offer is unique, in that you earn bonus Membership Rewards points instead of a statement credit.

I value Membership Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so this offer is worth ~$50 to me.

Postmates | Spend $30 or more, get $10 back

This one falls into the “easy money” category for me. Postmates has pretty much replaced hotel room service for me, and has been useful for having other items delivered as well.

You already get $10 off your first order with Postmates when entering a promo code on signup, so can effectively get $20 back when stacked with Amex Offers.

Getting offers on multiple American Express cards

Keep in mind that once you add an Amex Offer to one card, the offer will disappear for all your other cards (assuming you’re eligible on multiple cards).

The workaround here is to open each card in a new tab, and then add all the offers at once, which will allow you to take advantage of these offers on multiple cards.

Some offers will still be targeted to Membership Rewards-earning cards, versus other American Express products, but this method will maximize the number of cards you can link the offers to.

Bottom line

Amex Offers is one of the many reasons that I hold onto as many Amex cards long term as possible, given that I can save hundreds of dollars per year with these offers.

There are a lot of great niche offers through Amex Offers, especially for travel purchases, and there are several retailer-specific offers this month as well, so you’ll want to see what you’re targeted for if you have Back to School or other shopping to do this month.

Which Amex Offer are you most excited for this month?

Comments

  1. US only cards 🙁

Ben, we need to have a guest posting for Middle Eastern cards for the audience who has the ME3 as their home carriers. Some cracking cards here!

  2. Does the Amex FHR billing really come from the Ritz (and not Amex travel) so that the offer would be triggered?

  3. Lucky, if you read the terms of the Ritz offer, it sounds like it cannot be combined with FHR benefits b/c “Reservations must be made online at ritzcarlton.com, via the Ritz-Carlton App or by calling 800-542-8680”. i don’t think it’s possible to get FHR benefits thru these channels (am I wrong?)

  4. Here’s another way to use the Ritz Carlton offer. Book a package and incur $500 in incidentals including excursions that can be charged to the room. I just completed a stay at RC Maui and Costco’s package was seriously cheaper than a la carte pricing (air, hotel, car) or attempting points redemption and our room was upgraded to an ocean front view (vs. ocean view which means partial OV there). No I don’t have elite status. And for whatever reason, AAA and FHR rooms were “not available” yet no problem with Costco for the same dates.

  5. Saw the Sheraton offer on our Amex Gold cards. Haven’t seen Delta or Hilton yet. Usually stay in Hiltons.

  6. I’m also wondering if booking Ritz from FHR will trigger this offer. If so, that would be fantastic.

  7. I have an Amex offer too for anyone. Give me $100 and I will give you $20 back after three days

  8. The Sheraton offer at least is valid only at US properties, according to the T&Cs, and in my experience the US-only restriction on Amex hotel offers is indeed enforced.

  9. It doesn’t look like you can use it with AmexFHR.

“Offer only valid at The Ritz-Carlton in the US/US territories. Reservations must be made online at ritzcarlton.com, via the Ritz-Carlton App or by calling 800-542-8680. “

  10. I have an upcoming one night Ritz stay at $619 a night. Is it a better value to use my Amex card and get 1 point per dollar with $100 cash back or use my Marriott card and get 5 points per dollar spent?

  11. @Julie – “targeted” – what exactly does that mean? How do they target you for a particular offer? I use my AE cc for primarily hotel and airline purchases and was surprised that I didn’t get a number of these hotel offers. What exactly do they target based on?

Hoping I can sign up for some of these via twitter.

  12. Although it says “valid on room rate & room charges”, it’s been my experience that buying gift cards in person for the travel offers does work (I’ve done Marriott and Hilton), but if someone wanted to test out the Sheraton, Ritz, Hilton offers and report back, I think that would be helpful for a lot of readers. The key benefit for SPG is that you could buy the card only at Sheraton’s, but hopefully be able to use the card at any SPG property. I’m not sure what kind of gift card you get at the Ritz, but that would be great if it could be used at any Marriott branded hotel.

If someone could buy a $1,000 Delta GC at the airport and report back, that would be interesting also.

  13. I used the same Sheraton offer last December in Steamboat Springs for a ski trip and it worked out great. The Sheraton had an in-house equipment rental facility that offered discounts to guests and the hotel was ski-in/ski-out.
