Earn Double Alaska Miles For Travel On Japan Airlines

As of this past week, Alaska Airlines and Japan Airlines have launched a partnership, which includes codesharing as well as a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement.

As of now it’s possible to earn and redeem Japan Airlines miles for travel on Alaska, and it’s also possible to earn Alaska miles for travel on Japan Airlines. As of later this year it should be possible to also redeem Alaska miles on Japan Airlines, though no exact date has been set yet.

I’m especially excited about that, since Japan Airlines has incredible first & business class products, and Alaska Mileage Plan allows stopovers even on one-way awards. This means it’ll be possible to fly from the US to Tokyo, have a stopover, and then continue from Tokyo to other destinations in Asia, all on one award.

For those Alaska flyers looking to fly Japan Airlines, there’s presently a promotion to celebrate the launch of this partnership. Mileage Plan members can earn doubles miles for travel on select Japan Airlines flights between July 7 and September 30, 2016.

JAL-Bonus-Miles

Registration is required prior to travel (though not prior to booking travel), and the promotion is valid for Japan Airlines flights to or from Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Vancouver.

Furthermore, the promotion is only valid for travel in the following fare classes (discounted economy fares aren’t eligible):

  • First Class – A, F
  • Business Class – C, D, J, I, X
  • Premium Economy – E, W
  • Economy fares – B, H, K, M, Y

The usual Alaska mileage earning rates for travel on Japan Airlines are as follows:

AS-JL-1

If you are flying Japan Airlines in an eligible fare class, this could make it more tempting to credit those flights to Alaska Mileage Plan. Keep in mind that you also earn the Mileage Plan elite bonus miles for travel on partner airlines, at the following rates:

  • MVP members earn an additional 50% bonus miles
  • MVP Gold members earn an additional 100% bonus miles
  • MVP Gold 75K members earn an additional 125% bonus miles (plus 50,000 bonus miles upon requalifying for status)

The full terms of the promotion are as follows:

Mileage Plan members who register for this promotion before their first qualifying flight will receive double miles on nonstop Japan Airlines flights between Los Angeles (LAX), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), or Vancouver, B.C. (YVR) and Japan, for travel from July 7, 2016, through September 30, 2016. Double miles are valid on fares booked in First Class – A, F, Business Class – C, D, J, I, X, Premium Economy – E, W, and economy fares – B, H, K, M, Y. Flights must be marketed and operated by Japan Airlines. Mileage for qualifying flights must be credited to the member’s Mileage Plan account. Double miles earned are based on the class of service flown. The percentage earned can be viewed on the Japan Airlines partner page. Not valid on free or award travel. Double miles do not count towards Mileage Plan elite status. Double miles will be awarded within four to six weeks of meeting the promotion’s qualifications. All terms and conditions of the Mileage Plan program apply. Offer subject to change without notice.

Bottom line

This is a very nice promotion if you have paid travel on Japan Airlines coming up, especially since you earn double miles in addition to the elite bonus miles you’d otherwise earn. It would be even better if it were valid on all Japan Airlines flights in all fare classes, but something is better than nothing.

Japan Airlines has some good discounted business class fares published out of Asia, so this could be a nice way to earn a good number of redeemable miles for Japan Airlines travel. Just keep in mind that most discounted economy fare classes aren’t eligible for the offer.

  1. Hello. I just want to understand the part “valid for Japan Airlines flights out of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Vancouver.” and the part “Japan Airlines has some good discounted business class fares published out of Asia, so this could be a nice way to earn a good number of redeemable miles for Japan Airlines travel”
So if I book travel from HKG to LAX I would still be able to earn the double miles in Business?
    Thanks Jason

  2. If you’re MVP 75k, you’d earn double miles plus the 125 bonus? How much are sample fares in those classes?

  3. Mmm so now they are partnering with AA/BA/CX/JL/LA/QF and DL/AF/KL/KE… Is it possible to see Alaska (probably with VX) join Oneworld or Skyteam one day?

  4. Interested in flying on Japan Air, bus class, 2 passengers, want to fly from SFO to Japan, time, fall of 2017. Want to use my miles. Pls comment.
