We’ve seen a ton of amazing business class fares lately, as seems to increasingly be the norm. Booking ~$1,200 business class fares between the US and Europe is becoming quite commonplace, at which point you almost have to wonder whether miles are worthwhile anymore. For example, I just recently booked an ~$1,100 roundtrip business class ticket between San Francisco and Rome.

We seem to see the most discounted business class tickets for summer travel, given that there’s a lot of leisure demand that time of year, but not a lot of premium cabin demand (since business travel is slower).

So while this isn’t the cheapest fare I’ve ever seen, I think it’s worth pointing out, because it’s potentially extremely useful.

British Airways has a special business class fare sale at the moment between New York and London if you travel as a party of two. Very rarely do we see business class fare sales between New York and London, given that it’s a business market — typically British Airways fare sales out of the US are to cities other than London.

At the moment you can fly roundtrip business class between New York and London on British Airways for ~$1,650 per person, with the following basic terms:

  • The fare is valid for travel through May 31, 2017
  • A 14 day advance purchase is required
  • A Sunday night minimum stay is required
  • You must travel as a party of two

Without any discounts, the fares are ~$2,250 roundtrip per person.

Then you use the usual “tricks” to lower the ticket cost by $400 and 10%.

First you can save $400 per ticket by being an AARP member, as described in this post. Anyone can join AARP for $16 per year — there’s no age requirement.

You have to click through the AARP portal to receive the discount, and the discount will be reflected in the flights as you select them. The discount is valid on British Airways marketed flights, though you can fly on a partner like American.

American’s 777-300ER business class

The discounted price is reflected in your total as long as you shop through the AARP portal, so there’s nothing extra you have to do. In this case it lowers the fare to ~$1,850 per person.

You can also save a further 10% by using promotion code CARDOFFERU at the time of booking, which is valid for those with the British Airways Visa Signature® Card.

BA-Fare-3

It’s worth noting that’s only valid on flights both marketed and operated by British Airways, so if you want to take advantage of that you need to fly British Airways the whole way, rather than American.

That lowers the fare to ~$1,670 per person.

BA-Fare-2

As I explained above, this isn’t the absolute best business class fare sale I’ve seen between the US and Europe purely in terms of the total amount, but what makes this special is that:

  • It’s valid for travel through next May, while most fare sales are only valid for travel over very specific time periods
  • It’s valid between New York and London, where it’s rare to see a fare sale, given that it’s a business market

Possibly my favorite part of this is that you can take British Airways’ Club World London City service, which is the all business class Airbus A318 that British Airways operates between New York and London City (on the return the plane stops in Shannon, where you clear immigration). It’s a neat flight, so is a fun way to take advantage of this fare, in my opinion.

Keep in mind if you were to redeem British Airways Avios for these flights, you’d pay over $1,100 in taxes and carrier imposed surcharges, in addition to the Avios required. That doesn’t even account for the fact that award availability is quite limited, and also that you don’t earn Avios for award tickets.

Bottom line

This is by no means the cheapest transatlantic fare sale we’ve seen, though I do think it’s worth mentioning and quite special, given that it’s valid through the middle of next year. It’s especially cool that you can take British Airways’ Club World London City service, and be on an A318 with a total of just 32 business class seats.

Those who frequently fly between New York and London will find value in this fare sale, in my opinion.

Anyone tempted by this British Airways fare between New York and London?

  1. Do I have to book this as a NYC London RT or can I book on to another airport, like Athens?

  2. I follow several travel blogs and read Boarding Area several times a day but I haven’t seen much in the way of business class fare sales this summer. There have been a ton of coach sales to Europe. Who or where should I be looking for business class sales as that is what I am primarily interested in?

    Thanks!

  3. http://www.britishairways.com/en-us/offers/partners/aarp-member-benefits# includes “valid for outbound travel November 1, 2015 – March 31, 2017 on British Airways and British Airways codeshare services operated by American Airlines and on British Airways codeshare services operated by Iberia only.”

That suggests you can’t get the AARP discount for “travel through May 31, 2017”, which may be why I’m seeing $1,105 one way per person for travel starting in late April.

    What am I missing?

  4. Me three on the wondering. I don’t know about most bloggers other than Ben. Some of the airlines sent me discounted business air info– KLM & Qatar for sure had biz class sales this summer…But it would be nice if we saw more content like this. Not really interested in chasing miles what with the devals & the hassles…

  5. Based on a couple test dates, travel outbound does seem to have to start by March 31, 2017. Also the BA credit card 10% throws an error with flights in late March 2017 —
    Error
The first departure date is outside the valid departure dates for cardofferu.
Sorry, cardofferu may not be used in conjunction with some discounted fares. Please refer to the promotion rules

  6. Just received this in the mail from BA

Fares are per person and start at just $2287 from New York*, $2527 from Chicago*, and $3544 from Los Angeles* fares are available from all other USA gateways at slightly higher prices.

seems sale is over or I don’t understand the details.
