A couple of weeks ago Ford wrote about Starwood’s Luxury Privileges program, which offers extra benefits for booking at St. Regis, W, Luxury Collection, and select Westin properties. It’s a program I’ve used (and written about) for years.

It’s basically Starwood’s equivalent of American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts or Virtuoso. For booking through a Starwood Luxury Privileges travel advisor, you get the following perks:

  • Upgrade on arrival, early check-in, late checkout, all subject to availability
  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Complimentary in-room internet access (though all SPG members now receive free internet)
  • A hotel specific perk, once per stay (typically ~100 USD food and beverage, property, or spa credit, though it varies)
  • 3rd or 4th night free at select properties

In the last post, Ford had a full list of benefits by hotel, an explanation of which rates qualify, etc.

While I think Ford did a great job covering the program, I wanted to specifically cover one of the very best benefits of Starwood Luxury Privileges. Specifically, I’m talking about the hotels that offer a third or fourth night free.

This list is constantly changing, but at the moment, there are 10 Starwood Luxury Privileges properties offering a third night free promotion, and 38 Starwood Luxury Privileges properties offering a fourth night free promotion. I’ll talk a bit more about when this makes sense below, but first here’s a listing of eligible hotels, along with the associated terms (all of which are subject to change):

Which rate is eligible for the third/fourth night free benefit?

In this instance, it’s the Starwood Luxury Privileges rates that are eligible for the third/fourth night free promos. What’s so cool is that you get the Luxury Privileges benefits and the fourth night free.

Typically the Starwood Luxury Privileges rate is equivalent to the flexible rate, though once in a while it varies — sometimes it’s higher, and sometimes it’s lower.

Is this better than Citi Prestige fourth night free?

The Citi Prestige Card fourth night free benefit is awesome, so if you have the card, you should also consider that. There are pros and cons to each option, though:

  • Through the Citi Prestige Card fourth night free, you could book an advance purchase/non-refundable rate and get the fourth night free
  • However, if booking through the Citi Prestige Card fourth night free program, you can’t get the Luxury Privileges perks

So which option is better really depends on the specific hotel and circumstances, though everyone can crunch the numbers for themselves.

Is this the same as free night promos through Amex FHR & Virtuoso?

Sometimes American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts and Virtuoso also have third or fourth night free promos. Sometimes they overlap with Luxury Privileges promos. Sometimes they don’t.

But the best part of the Luxury Privileges third or fourth night free benefit is that it applies at many hotels that aren’t part of the above programs. Even if the hotels overlap, often the promos don’t.

How do I book these rates and get a quote?

Luxury Privileges rates have to booked through a travel advisor belonging to the program, and unfortunately the rates can’t be accessed by the public (though like I said above, the rate is generally the same as the best available rate). Ford can certainly book them, and can be reached at fordb@travelsociety.com, for any questions or a rate quote. If you’re a travel advisor who also has access to Luxury Privileges, feel free to post your contact information below, so others can contact you.

Bottom line

Nowadays there are a lot of great programs to consider when you’re booking hotels. On the most basic level, the Citi Prestige Card fourth night free benefit is valid at a vast majority of hotels. However, I have lots of readers outside the US, and also lots of readers who don’t have the card.

I love Starwood Luxury Privileges because I’m a Starwood loyalist, and because it includes a lot of hotels that aren’t otherwise part of Virtuoso or Fine Hotels & Resorts. Luxury Privileges is great for the free breakfast, a room upgrade, and property specific amenity, but if you can throw in a third or fourth night free, it gets even better.

It’s at least something that’s worth being aware of.

  1. Wait, so I can’t club the SPG’s 3rd Night and Citi’s 4th Night with these specific offers, right?

  2. But wouldn’t the Z3R promotion be a better deal. It gives all the same benefits and you get the 3rd night free. I recently booked Vana Belle in Koh Samui and got the 3rd and 6th night free through the SPG promotion and the 4th night reimbursed through Citi Prestige 4th night free . So essentially it was getting 50% off.

  3. How do you book the Z3R rate and the prestige 4th night rate? The Prestige concierge can book the Z3R rate too?

  4. Yes, the Z3R promotion is an SPG promotion available to anyone. Citi 4th night free can only include rates that are available to everyone and this promotion is. I am not sure about all hotels and resorts included in promotion, but in the case of Vana Belle it comes with daily breakfast for two, early check in and late check out, etc… All the same benefits that are touted above. But once you tack on reimbursement for 4th night free it turns into a real deal.

Because the Z3R rate at Vana Belle required prepayment, I have already received the reimbursement of the 4th night free + taxes.

  5. Agreed with Sandra – I just did the same.

The Citi agent is effectively making the reservation on the SPG website and simply adding their IATA#. As far as SPG is concerned, this is no different than booking directly. Of course the Z3R rate is completely prepaid, however the reassurance of reimbursement for the 4th night before you travel is nice.

  6. Can you ask Starwood to update the available dates? This is especially needed on most India hotels on the full list. Things like “through July 27, 2016 and July 31, 2016” make it look like someone isn’t paying attention.

  7. Any chance you’ve an updated list of hotels (Starwood and other hotel chains) that offer free 3rd or 4th night free? I’m trying to find good deal of hotel stays in Europe in mid December with my Citi Prestige. Thx!
