In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!
American Express has a program where they offer existing cardmembers a bonus when they refer others to their cards. It’s a nice way to incentivize members to tell their friends about the cards they love.
While the sign-up bonus is standard, American Express is offering an increased referral bonus. Through June 15, 2016, you can earn 10,000 Starpoints for referring a friend to either the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express or Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express.
If you’d like to refer someone (it can be a friend, spouse, etc.), you can do so at these links:
The bonus points should post 6-8 weeks after the referred cardmember is approved, and each member can earn at most 55,000 Starpoints per calendar year per card type (meaning you can earn the full bonus for referring up to five people per card). Just enter your friends’ email addresses, and then they’ll be sent a link through which they can apply.
You can even email yourself a link, and then post a link with your referral code in it, because the code in the email should work for anyone you refer.
The sign-up bonus on both the SPG Personal Amex and SPG Business Amex is 25,000 Starpoints upon completing minimum spend, which is the standard bonus. Early in the year we saw a sign-up bonus of 35,000 Starpoints, though we don’t know whether or not that will return. It was the highest bonus ever.
With the upcoming merger between Marriott and Starwood, we don’t know how much longer the card will be around, and we also don’t know if American Express or Chase will take over the contract for the combined hotel group. It’s possible we see another increased sign-up bonus in the coming months, though it’s far from a guarantee, since there might be limited upside to American Express in offering that, if the card is only going to be around for a limited time.
I value Starpoints at 2.2 cents each, so to me the 25,000 bonus Starpoints are worth $540. These are points which can be redeemed for free nights, a combination of flights and hotel stays, or converted into airline miles.

10,000 Starpoints is a huge referral bonus (to me 10,000 Starpoints are worth $220), so it’s a very nice reward for telling your friends about the cards. It could still be that we see a higher sign-up bonus in the future, given that the SPG program is sticking around at least through the end of next year. If that’s the case, chances are you’ll still be able to refer friends to that offer as well.
Regardless, I think it’s at least worth being aware of this offer, as the total points up for grabs are 35,000 if someone is successfully approved.
