Update: There’s an exciting Limited Time Offer for the Hilton American Express cards through 5/31/17! The links below are expired, but you can learn more about best offers we’ve seen on these cards!

Yesterday I first shared the details of Hilton’s newest promotion, for stays between May 1 and August 31, 2016. The promotion offers double base points on all Hilton stays. It’s worth noting that you can now register for the promotion on the official promo page.

Through this promotion you’re earning an additional 10 HHonors points per dollar spent. All properties are participating in the promotion, and once you register you’re good for the entire promotion period.

This promotion is essentially an extension of the promotion which Hilton has been running between January 1 and April 30, 2016, also offering double base points. I think Hilton deserves credit for running eight months of nonstop promotions, as they don’t have a gap between promotions like other programs do.

I value Hilton points at ~0.4 cents each, so to me this is like an additional return of ~4% on my hotel spend. That’s not a reason to switch a stay to Hilton (at least for someone who’s crunching the numbers), but at the same time it’s probably enough to keep people from switching stays to other hotel groups.

As I’ve said before, Hilton does offer a very good return on everyday spend for hotel stays. If you’re a Diamond member with the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card or American Express Hilton HHonors Surpass Card, you’d earn an average of 40-42 points per dollar spent with Hilton:

Bottom line

This promotion basically extends the spring promotion which Hilton had, offering double base points on all stays. Hilton HHonors is extremely rewarding for hotel spend to begin with, and this promotion makes it even better. I’d recommend registering for the promotion as soon as possible.

  1. Thanks for the reminder!

I have a meeting where the group hotel is a Hilton, so it’s nice timing.

  2. Just to confirm, reservations (not stays) made prior to the registration to this promotion will be eligible, correct?

  3. @Santastico that is correct.. You have to be registered before check in, not before reservation

    @Lucky.. thank you,

@JC are you complainng that Lucky spreads junk? or complaining about your spam filter?

  4. Can you register for this new promotion while still registered for the double points promotion expiring April 30? As in, registering for the new promotion doesn’t cancel out the old promotion? I have a reservation from April 30 to May 2.

  5. Be careful if you have a group reservation such as through a trade show or conference because Hilton has been denying points when you don’t register on their website. Looks like its all part of Hilton’s “Stop Clicking Around” strategy to avoid paying fees to third party sites. I stayed at a Hilton property in Minneapolis for the same trade show 5 years in a row and last year they denied me points for the first time, even though I had booked through the trade show all previous times as well. Then when I called and complained they gave me the points. I had the same experience with Hyatt recently, and again I got the points after complaining. So be diligent and watch your accounts for points activity, and get ready to scream bloody murder if they deny you.

  6. @ Endre – I’d say at least 75% of comments posted on OMAAT are empty junk like JC’s comment that should have been redirected to Lucky’s spam folder. Sorry to post about junk which probably makes this comment junk but my junk comment about junk is painfully true.

  7. “I value Hilton points at ~0.4 cents each, so to me this is like an additional return of ~4% on my hotel spend. Utterly meaningless statement, especially to anyone who plays the game with a full deck. To even think about switching stays from chain to chain to earn NON-TRANSFERABLE promo points makes little sense. It is a recipe for winding up with points in a number of different currencies but not enough points in any one of the currencies to be able to afford a redemption…

  8. @ DCS — If you’re staying in a city with two comparable hotels at similar prices, why couldn’t points reasonably be a deciding factor?

  9. BTW, other than the statement above, a great post! I just registered and was a bit disappointed because I’d hoped that a targeted promo would be bundled with the global Q2 promo, as has been the case for some global promos (e.g. Q4 2015 global promo that revealed after I registered an offer to earn 5000 points after my 5th stay …)

  10. @Lucky — Because I play the game to earn enough points to redeem for free stays and the best way to do that is to pick a program/chain and stick with it. To switch stays from chain to another because of promos would result in exactly what I said above: winding up with points in a number of different currencies but not enough points in any one of the currencies to be able to afford a redemption. If the points were transferable across HOTEL chains/programs then switching stays for the sake of promo points would not be a crazy thing at all.

  11. @Paul — You are absolutely right. I just checked the details of the promo at Loyalty Lobby, which in my opinion is the best site out there for getting unbiased info on virtually every hotel or airline promo running at any given time, and it appears that 2 types of targeted offers are revealed after one registers for this HH Q2 promo: (a) lifetime HH Diamond members will earn 10,000 HH points after EVERY 10th stay during the promo period, and (b) targeted HH members (eligibility criteria unclear) will get 5,000 HH points after their first stay of 2 nights or more. This really kool promo within a promo that’s similar to what HH has offered with their recent global promos appears to be here to stay and obliterates any claims about how HGP’s promo is “better”, which it should have been to make up for the fact that this is their first promo since last September 😉

I am not sure why I was not targeted for anything this time but my own success at earning HH points at a brisk pace so far this year might have indicated that I did not need boosting…

  12. As a new HH Diamond I’m a little unsure which rate to book..Narrowed it down to Conrad Singapore finally after reading your many tips and tricks…With the Big World Sale and Unlimited bonus..combined should net me a few extra points. My question is do I book the HH sale rate…no mention of breakfast… etc… OR must I book the Hh sale Bb rate…As Diamond does the Hh sale rate include Bfast and cancellation? although it doesn’t state in terms and conditions…Please help your advice would be apprieciated, and ultimately time saving.
