Update: There’s an exciting Limited Time Offer for the Hilton American Express cards through 5/31/17! The links below are expired, but you can learn more about best offers we’ve seen on these cards!

Through May 4, 2016, American Express is offering their biggest ever sign-up bonuses on both of their Hilton HHonors American Express credit cards. The details of these offers are as follows:

With that in mind, let’s look at the perks of these cards in more detail:

Conrad-Koh-Samui-100
Conrad Koh Samui

Hilton HHonorsTM Card from American Express details

This is the no annual fee Hilton American Express card, and has the following points earning structure:

  • 7x points on Hilton purchases
  • 5x points at US restaurants, US supermarkets, and US gas stations
  • 3x points on other purchases

The card also offers HHonors Silver status for as long as you have the card, which gets you a 15% points bonus. If you spend $20,000 on the card in a year you’ll earn Hilton HHonors Gold status as well.

Keep in mind that all Hilton elite members receive a fifth night free on award stays, which is probably the most useful perk of being a Silver member.

The greatest benefit of holding onto a no annual fee card long term is that it can help improve your credit score. Your average age of accounts is one of the major things which factors into your score, and that metric is greatly improved if you hold onto a few cards long term.

Furthermore, this is a fantastic sign-up bonus for a no annual fee credit card.

Hilton HHonorsTM Surpass® Card from American Express details

This is the premium Hilton American Express card, and has a $75 annual fee. The card has the following points earning structure:

  • 12x points on Hilton purchases
  • 6x points at US restaurants, US supermarkets, and US gas stations
  • 3x points on other purchases

As you can see, this card offers a significantly better return on spend at Hilton properties, a marginally better return at restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations, and the same return on everyday spend.

The card also offers Hilton HHonors Gold status for as long as you have the card, which gets you perks like complimentary breakfast, a 25% points bonus, and club lounge access subject to availability.

Those are some great perks, as this is the lowest annual fee card which gets you Hilton Gold status (you also receive it with the $95 annual fee Citi® Hilton HHonors Reserve Card and $550 annual fee Platinum Card® from American Express).

Bottom line

The sign-up bonuses on both the Hilton HHonors Amex and Hilton HHonors Surpass Amex are the best we’ve ever seen, so there has never been a better time to sign-up. There’s merit to both products, in my opinion.

The 75K sign-up bonus Hilton HHonors Amex is a great no annual fee card which can help build your credit score long term and can also get you access to fifth night free awards.

Meanwhile the 100K sign-up bonus Hilton HHonors Surpass Amex is the lowest annual fee card which gets you Hilton HHonors Gold status, getting you valuable perks like breakfast and bonus points.

You really can’t go wrong with either of these limited time offers.

Do you plan on picking up either the Hilton HHonors Amex or Hilton HHonors Surpass Amex through this offer?

Comments

  1. When looking primarily at the sign-up bonuses, even at 100,000 points, wouldn’t getting the Reserve card be better even with the additional $20 AF compared to the Surpass? Two free nights at any Hilton could easily be way more than 100,000 points right?

  2. Is it possible to apply and use American Express cards even if you don’t live in the Us? Will this restrict the rewards and benefits they offer or will there be any problems?
If yes, is the Platinum Card from American Express worth the 450$ annual fee???

  3. The Hilton Conrad Maldives alone is something crazy like 95,000 points per night……no thank you, I rather get the reserve Hilton card and get 2 free nights

  4. I could have sworn the highest offer for the basic HH AmEx was 80K a few years back, when I opened it. Maybe it was 70K?

  5. Does the surpass card have foreign transaction fees? I see nothing to suggest otherwise but it seems crazy for such an international brand’s credit card to be subject to these fees.

  6. This should be a good 6-9 months with AMEX as the Costco loss sets in, plus the potential demise of the SPG card as well. Perfect tining as CHASE gets tighter. AMEX appears to have loosened up with that once in a lifetime rule. Safer prospects on getting the bonus again if they solicit you first.

  7. Thank you Lucky for the heads-up. From what I gathered in your past posts, you do not usually favor Hilton as a hotel rewards program. Do you still stand by that opinion? or is there something new that has changed your mind about the program that makes it worth getting these bonuses? thanks!

  8. I logged into my no fee Amex Hilton account and they are offering me to “apply for an upgrade to Surpass for 100,000.” I don’t see any language about once in lifetime in the terms… does anyone have any data points on this ? I have only seen the upgrade to 50k in the past.

  9. SPG loyalist, but with the merger I’m wondering if it’s worth checking out Hilton. Are there any restrictions/downsides to getting the basic versions of both the AMEX & Citi cards, besides the foreign transaction fee? The sign-up bonuses are pretty good, combined with a decent rate of return on everyday spend and no annual fee, there’s no reason not to have both.

  10. When I clicked through, the Surpass signup offer was changed to 50k since I am already an Amex cardmember (just not of this card).

  11. Lucky: in past posts regarding significant credit card points bonuses for signing up you have usually provided an approximate “value” for the points. Do you have a calculated “value” for Hilton HHonors points?

  12. What’s interesting is that you rarely hear about any true Hilton top-tiers via stays…folks go for mid-tier via the credit card, which make sense, but no one wants to really *stay* with Hilton to earn status.

Seems like a dog of a program compared to other superior options.

  13. Just got off the chat with a rep. I wanted a bonus match from 60,000 to 75,000. I got the card 6 weeks ago. He said to call because he couldn’t do anything and would leave a note in my file. Actually I didn’t want a note left but he said it was too late, once it’s in there it can’t be deleted. Anyone know my chances on getting matched by AMEX? Thx

  14. The Citi Reserve offers close to 200k points if you use the free night certificates on the highest properties.

GIven the higher acceptability of Visa cards vs Amex cards and the higher bonus( coupled with anniversary bonus), no one should sign up for the Amex Hilton cards.
For everyday spend, the Amex Everyday is much better.

The Blogger should compare the card with the Citi option to provide customers with the full picture.

  15. Anyone know, if I previously had the “Surpass” card (and have since cancelled), do I still qualify for the sign-up bonus on the standard card?

  16. Yes if you had the surpass and have not had the regular one you should still be good to get the regular bonus.

People have gotten upgrade bonuses in the past to the surpass even if they have had the card before.

  17. I signed up for the SPG Amex about a month ago. Any time restrictions on signing up for another like Citi has?

  18. Even having gold status I find it very difficult to get excited about Hilton or Hilton points. They are my back up’s back up.

  19. @ Theresa Irving — Nope, should be good to sign up for it as it’s from a different issuer. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  20. Hilton is the best hotel rewards out there. No doubt about it. This is the best card ever ever ever.

Until of course next month when there will be another best card ever ever ever. Don’t forget to sign up for that one too.

You will get to this at least 12 times this year. How exciting.

  21. How much would you value HHonors points at? the 3x bonus on everyday spend is better than the SPG card, but you still consider it to be the one of the best for everyday spend. I know the SPG points are more versatile, and you value them at ~2.2 cents each. If you value HHonors points at <.73 cents each the SPG card would be better anyways but that seems like a low estimate.

  22. the comp breakfast at the gold level is only a continental breakfast at certain properties.. Same thing with executive lounge access

Read the fine print and don’t believe everything you read on this site as the gospel.. This is directly from the Hilton website..
