You Don’t See This Everyday: Hostage Gets Selfie With Hijacker

Earlier today an EgyptAir flight scheduled to fly between Alexandria and Cairo was hijacked, and subsequently diverted to Cyprus. As it turns out, the hijacker’s ex-wife lived in Cyprus, and apparently he wanted to see her. Fortunately all the hostages were released and everyone is safe, other than the hijacker, who I assume will be serving some jail time.

But here’s the highlight of the story — check out the below picture a Scottish guy took with the hijacker. This guy was apparently one of the last few hostages (dozens were released earlier). At some point during the hostage situation he got a selfie with the hijacker, which he seems quite amused by.

Via the Evening Express:

Ben Innes, who lives in Aberdeen, can be seen smiling next to a man who claimed to have an explosive vest.

Still in Cyprus, Mr Innes was in brief contact with the Evening Express this evening, and confirmed he was on the plane.

The health and safety auditor, is originally from Leeds, is understood to have been one of the final three hostages who left the plane before Mustafa surrendered to police.

I don’t know what to make of this, so I’ll just go with:

Yolanda

Either way, it gave me a good chuckle!

  1. maybe they weren’t hijacked after all.. but had a party on board and media just misunderstood the whole situation? ..
    😀

  2. I may be missing the point but how is he Scottish if he’s originally from Leeds? Not that I’m beaming with national pride here…..

  3. I’m guessing they knew this guy was harmless by this point and he thought it would be funny to have a photo with his “hijacker”. I mean the guy who is supposed to be a terrorist is standing there posing for a selfie. Even the government was just calling this guy an idiot. Sounds like he needs to go to a mental institution. Probably best not to stop when you have a chance to get off a hijacked plane, but the world is full of idiots and this picture apparently has two of them in it.

  4. HI LUCKY
I HAVE NOTICED YOU DONT REVIEW DELTA AND UNITED AND OTHER AIRLINES IN USA.
    WHY IS THAT??

  5. THIS ISN’T A SELFIE I’M TIRED OF THESE YOUNG HIPSTERS CALLING ANY PICTURE WITH PEOPLE IN IT A “SELFIE”

  6. 10 years from now the word “photograph” will no longer exist – it will have been replaced by “selfie.”

“Wait, stop the car, let me take a selfie of that gorgeous view.”

  7. He must have realised by then that this guy was a complete headcase.

Good story to tell the lads in the pub anyway!

Oh and yes, he cannot be Scottish if he is from Leeds!

  8. Highlight of all my CX flights is that I try to take a selfie with each flight attendant. I accumulated about 700 pics in the past two years.

  9. As I commented over on Gary’s blog, I look at this as an example of someone who’s choosing to deal with a highly stressful situation through humor, which I think is fantastic. I love that he took this picture, as opposed to running around scared.

  10. Maybe MTV should develop an annual show called “The Selfie Awards.” Lord knows there’s an awards show for just about everything else…
