Cheap Flights To Europe This Summer: $465 To Milan!

Via The Flight Deal, American is offering extremely cheap flights to Europe this Summer out of Philadelphia. We’ve seen some similar prices for off-season travel, but this is a phenomenal rate for peak season dates.

For context, I’ve been watching European fares for a few friends this summer, and travel over these dates has mostly been in the $1100 – $1400 range.  So this is a significant discount! Finding fares to Europe for less than $500 over Summer is highly unusual, and this deal won’t last.

Fare rules & availability

Inventory actually looks really good for this fare, but there are some restrictions:

  • Departures must be Sunday through Wednesday
  • Return flights must be Monday through Thursday
  • A 7-day minimum stay is required

The best way to search is by using Google Flights. This fare seems to be available for travel mid-May through mid-August. Crazy fare for peak dates!

This books into O inventory, and while we (stupidly) don’t know what mileage earning will look like in the latter half of the year with AAdvantage, at present you’d earn 11,887 miles with either American or Alaska, in addition to any elite bonuses.

Connecting onwards

Milan is convenient to all of Italy by train (or even Tuscany by car for the brave), and it’s easy to get to most of Europe by rail as well.

Milan Centrale train station

Malpensa airport is an easy 45 minutes by train from the city center, but if you’re thinking of heading into the Lake District you can go directly from the airport, which is nice.

Keep in mind British Airways still offers 4,500 Avios awards for short flights within Europe, and even longer flights can be a great deal. BA pays the bulk of the taxes and fuel surcharges on their “Reward Flight Saver” awards, so destinations throughout Europe are pretty reasonable.

What about Executive Platinum upgrades?

I see some dates with no confirmable upgrade space, and others with 5+ available seats, so it depends. You may not be able to confirm in advance, but this route shouldn’t be too tough for upgrades.

You can connect in either New York or Miami, so that gives you some options for finding the best upgrade space. Keep in mind you’ll have to change airports in New York if you go that route.

Hold, then discuss!

While we’ve been spoiled by ~$500 fares to Asia, this is still a very good price for tickets to Europe (particularly if you actually want to go to Europe, which tends to be a more popular summer destination than Asia).

These fares won’t last, so if you’re interested I’d hop on these as soon as possible. Keep in mind that in most cases American allows 24 hour holds on tickets, so you can always hold a ticket while you decide.

I will be booking this fare for a few friends — even with positioning to Philadelphia it’s still about half the cost of anything else from the West Coast. Given how easy it is to connect elsewhere in Europe, this could save you hundreds of dollars on your summer vacation.

  1. Surprisingly low fares for peak season. Especially to Milan…

I wonder if the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels are dampening leisure demand for TATL?

  2. @Tiffany: On a different subject, I am taking my family to a summer vacation in Italy this June. Would you have any tips for things to do/places to eat in Rome, Naples and the Amalfi Coast? Tks!!!

  3. its crazy, Im trying to do Miami to venice, naples to miami in late september and it looks like I’m going to have to spend $1200+ to do it, and prices have even been going up lately 🙁

  4. Just seen return Business class fares between nyc and Milan for £1,200 with both meridiana and Turkish, via naples and Instanbul. Wow
