JetBlue has just announced a promotion offering 25% off TrueBlue awards booked by Friday, March 4, 2016.
The basic terms of the promotion are as follows:
- Valid for flights between April 26 and June 16, 2016 (blackout dates of May 26-30 apply)
- Valid for travel Mondays through Saturdays (excludes travel on Sundays)
- Award flights won’t be discounted below 3,500 TrueBlue points (that means you can’t use this promotion for flights that retail for less than ~$60)
- Eligible fares will automatically reflect the 25% discount at the time of booking; there’s no registration required
JetBlue’s TrueBlue program is revenue based, and points can usually be redeemed for ~1.4 cents each towards the cost of a paid ticket. However, with the 25% discount, you can get closer to ~1.9 cents of value per JetBlue point. However, values can be even better than that, since there’s some inconsistency in redemption rates with TrueBlue.
For example, take the below flight between Tampa and New York, which costs $128:
Through this promotion, you can book the flight for just 4,700 points plus $5.60 in taxes, which gets you well over two cents per point of value.
With a revenue based program there’s no incentive to hoard points, and there’s not generally a huge variance in the value you’ll get per point. So you’re best off redeeming your points when sales like this happen, as they’ll help you maximize your points as much as possible.
JetBlue has offered similar promotions to this in the past, though they don’t come around that frequently. Back in the day they’d offer them a couple of times per year, though it has been well over a year since I’ve seen one.
This is a fantastic promotion. With revenue based frequent flyer programs you’re not typically going to get outsized value of your points, so this is about as good as it gets. JetBlue doesn’t offer these promotions often, so if you’re planning on traveling during the promotion period and have TrueBlue points, this is a great opportunity to redeem them.
