Earn Bonus Miles On American’s New Tokyo Haneda Flight

As I previously reported, American will be launching daily nonstop flights between Los Angeles and Tokyo Haneda as of February 11, 2016. This comes after a huge battle with Delta over their Tokyo Haneda slot, which has finally been settled. This represents American’s re-entry to Tokyo Haneda, after they canceled their New York to Tokyo Haneda route a few years back.

The Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda route will be operated by a Boeing 787-8, featuring 28 business class seats, 57 Main Cabin Extra seats, and 141 economy seats.

This route is also being operated as a joint venture with Japan Airlines, and complements the two daily existing flights that American and Japan Airlines have between Los Angeles and Tokyo Narita.

To celebrate the launch of this new service, American is offering bonus miles to passengers who take the Los Angeles to Tokyo Haneda flight. The promotion is valid for travel between February 11 and April 30, 2016, and registration is required prior to travel using promotion code LAHND.

The number of bonus miles you earn depends on your fare class, and ranges from 5,000 to 20,000 bonus miles roundtrip, as follows:

It’s worth noting that not all revenue fare classes are included. For example, “Q” fares don’t earn any bonus miles.

Here are the exact details of eligible fare classes depending on whether you’re booked on an American or Japan Airlines marketed flight:

* Includes Business Class fares booked in J, R, D or I; Full-fare Economy Class fares booked in Y, B or H; other Economy Class fares booked in K, M, L, W, V, G, N, or S on American Airlines marketed flights; Business Class booked in J, C, D or X; Full-fare Economy Class fares booked in Y, B or H; other Economy Class fares booked in K, M, L, V, S, G or R on Japan Airlines marketed flights.

Bottom line

This new route is part of American’s huge expansion out of LAX. They’re now offering longhaul flights from Los Angeles to London, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita, and soon Auckland.

Based on the flight times I’m still not sure I’d want to take American’s new flight to Tokyo Haneda. Hopefully the airport opens up more daytime slots for longhaul flights, even though Delta is trying to stand in the way.

While this bonus offer isn’t a reason to book American’s flight to Tokyo Haneda, it is a nice bonus if you’re going to be taking the flight anyway.

Is anyone booked on American’s new flight to Tokyo Haneda?

  1. Thanks Ben! I booked for my flight for April and will receive another 5,00 points for my wife and I. Thank you for the update! That was easy. Here I come Haneda. Only wish the arrival times are earlier…

  2. I’m going to Tokyo in a few weeks and tried several days to do this. However, the lowest priced fare “N” jumps the economy prices from about $1,000 RT to more than $2,000 RT. When business class seats RT are about $4,000, I didn’t think this bonus was worth it unless you can fly business, and even then CPM is not great after including the bonus.

  3. HND is such a more conveniently located airport than NRT I guess plenty of folks will jump on this vs the crappy old 772 unrefurb service to NRT.

  4. Their 787 has their weird rear-facing seats mixed in with the front-facing seats. I could never face backwards while traveling forwards. It would play games with my head.

Hopefully AA begins a LAX-HKG route which would be great, or even better a nonstop to Singapore would be wonderful.

  5. But arriving in Haneda at 11pm is not inviting. All you can do is book a hotel for the night … or sleep in the airport til the trains start running around 5am.
