As I first wrote about last week, the sign-up bonus on the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card is changing this Thursday, January 28, 2016. Right now the sign-up bonus is a very generous 50,000 bonus ThankYou Points after spending $3,000 in purchases within three months of account opening. The card has a $95 annual fee, which is waived for the first year.
We don’t actually know what the offer will change to, other than that it will change. These changes could include a change in the number of points, the minimum spend, etc. I’m generally inclined to think the offer is going down or minimum spend is going up, though I could be wrong. Do keep in mind that historically Citi will often match the better publicly available sign-up bonus if it changes within a short period of time. There’s no guarantee they’ll do it again, but personally I’d take the sure bet of 50,000 points over gambling and waiting until the end of the week.
If you don’t yet have the card, the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card is extremely compelling, given that it offers one of the most lucrative returns on everyday spend:
- 3x points on travel
- 3x points on gas
- 2x points on dining out and entertainment
- 1x point on all other purchases
That’s a huge return, and better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, in my opinion. Earning triple points on gas and virtually all travel purchases is huge, in my opinion.
This card very nicely complements the Citi Prestige® Card, which I consider to be the all around best card out there right now. You can always earn the sign-up bonus on both of these cards, as long as you keep in mind Citi’s rules for applying for new cards:
- You can only apply for one Citi card every eight days
- You can apply for no more than two Citi cards every 65 days
Citi ThankYou points are extremely valuable, as there are many great uses of them:
- You can transfer Citi ThankYou points to any of the program’s transfer partners, including Air France FlyingBlue, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, etc.
- You can redeem ThankYou points earned through this card for 1.25 cents each towards the cost of a hotel, car rental, cruise, or flight
- If you have this card in conjunction with the Citi Prestige® Card, you can redeem each point for 1.6 cents towards the cost of airfare on American; it’s easy to combine points between the two cards
If you don’t yet have the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card, I’d highly recommend signing up for it before the sign-up bonus changes on Thursday. Also keep in mind the bonus will likely be changed at some point during the day on Thursday, and not at midnight, so you’ll want to apply by tomorrow to be on the safe side.
In conjunction with the Citi Prestige® Card, the sign-up bonus on this card is worth $800+ of spend on American, which is huge. And for that matter this card is a long term keeper, given the awesome return it offers on everyday spend.
Will you be applying for the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card before the sign-up bonus changes? What changes do you think will be made to the card’s sign-up bonus?
