Register For Marriott’s 2016 MegaBonus Promotion

For years, Marriott’s promotions have been called MegaBonus, though the details of the promotion have differed. Back in the day, MegaBonus consistently offered a free night at a Category 1-4 property after every two paid stays. MegaBonus hasn’t been as generous since (which matches the trend in the hotel industry in general), though they’ve still kept the name of the promotion.

The details of the 2016 Marriott MegaBonus promotion have just been announced. Registration for MegaBonus opened today, and MegaBonus is valid for stays between February 1 and May 15, 2016.

Hotel promotions seem to be largely targeted nowadays, as hotels have so much data on their members that they want to offer the promotions which will generate the most incremental business. IHG is doing this with their current Accelerate Promotion, where different members are targeted for different bonuses.

Marriott’s MegaBonus promotion is similar, in that different accounts are targeted for different bonuses. But Marriott is taking it a step further — members are given one promotion to start, and when they complete it, can “unlock” the next promotion. So there are multiple promotions for each member, but you don’t know what the next one is until you completed the previous one. That’s sort of genius, if you ask me.

To view your MegaBonus promotion and register for it, log into your Marriott account here.

Here’s the promotion I was initially targeted for:

Earn a free night — and unlock your new bonus points offer. Let your winnings begin.

It’s a win-win-win:

  • Register by April 15, 2016
  • Stay at participating properties between February 1 – May 15, 2016
  • Win #1: Earn a free night after two stays
  • Win #2: Unlock your new bonus points offer – and register when it appears in your online account
  • Win #3: Every stay counts at 4,000+ hotels worldwide

Here are important terms associated with my version of the promotion:

  • The free night certificate is valid for stays at Category 1-5 hotels
  • The free night is valid for six months from the date of issuance
  • An additional offer will be unlocked and become available in the member’s account 2-3 days after this promotion is completed

Bottom line

From Marriott’s perspective this promotion is brilliant, as it’s an evolution of targeted promotions. Even with targeted promotions you can usually plan out your stays over a period of time and know just how many nights you have to spend with a hotel group over a given period to maximize the bonus. In this instance you have no clue what the subsequent promotions will be, so Marriott is banking on members being intrigued enough to want to see what subsequent promotions are.

Hotel rates are predicted to be on the decline this year, so I’m hoping that this leads to better promotions in general.

For context, Hilton and Starwood have also already announced the details of their spring 2016 promotions — this includes Hilton’s Double Your HHonors promotion, and Starwood’s Take Two promotion. We haven’t yet heard from Hyatt.

What do you make of Marriott’s secret, targeted MegaBonus promotion? And what offer were you targeted for? Hopefully we can compile some data points.

  3. @Lucky sez: “Back in the day, MegaBonus consistently offered a free night at a Category 1-4 property after every two paid stays. MegaBonus hasn’t been as generous since (which matches the trend in the hotel industry in general), though they’ve still kept the name of the promotion”

I just checked my account and I found no promo called MegaBonus. What I have been offered, instead, is the promo that’s apparently what MegaBonus used to offer “back in the day.”

My offer is called “Marriott Rewards® Welcome Back” and it is worded as follows:

“Earn up to 2 free nights when you stay at any of 3,800+ participating Marriott properties worldwide.

To earn your 2 free nights:

    Register by 01/19/16
Stay at any of 3,800+ participating hotels before 04/30/16
Earn a free night certificate* after your 2nd stay
Earn another free night certificate after your 4th stay.”

    Terms and Conditions
Credit toward this promotion is given for stays with Marriott hotels beginning the day after registration through the end of the month plus an additional three (3) months.
Qualifying members will receive up to two Marriott Rewards® e-certificates for a standard room type at a Category 1-4 location valid for 12 months from the date of issuance.
An earned free night award will be added to the member’s account within 3-5 business days after the second qualifying stay.
At Residence Inn® and TownePlace Suites®, e-certificates are for a studio or one bedroom.
A “stay” is defined as consecutive nights spent at the same hotel, regardless of check-in/check-out activity.
The e-certificate cannot be upgraded for use at Category 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 properties. However, you may use additional Marriott Rewards points to upgrade your room type at Category 1-4 locations.
Marriott Rewards e-certificates are valid only in connection with individual travel and are not applicable to group travel, package tours, conventions or other special rates and/or package programs.
A Marriott Rewards e-certificate may be used to pay for the expense of your room and related room taxes only.
The e-certificate may not be used to pay for food, beverage, service charges, other taxes or other incidental expenses.
You will not earn Marriott Rewards points for room charges or room tax covered by Marriott Rewards e-certificates.
The Marriott Rewards e-certificate is good for one night, for one room only, and does not count toward Elite level membership.
The Marriott Rewards e-certificate is non-transferable and has no cash value.
Nights spent while redeeming an award are not eligible for credit.
Marriott Vacation Club® owner-occupied weeks are not eligible for credit.
The details of this offer are not transferable.
All Marriott Rewards program terms and conditions apply.

  4. NB: The “Marriott Rewards® Welcome Back” that I just described above might be targeted, and if you are targeted, be sure to register TODAY because the deadline for registering is 01/19/16, which is TODAY!

  5. “Hotel promotions seem to be largely targeted nowadays, as hotels have so much data on their members that they want to offer the promotions which will generate the most incremental business.”

I think that statement may explain why I was not targeted for the MegaBonus, but instead got something called “Marriott Rewards® Welcome Back”. In 2015, I had only one stay at a Marriott property — a reward stay at Marriott Renaissance BKK in late December ’15, using my free night from the co-brand Chase Marriott visa. It means that I did not clock in sufficient stay activities at Marriott properties to qualify for the MegaBonus, but I am being welcomed back based on my one award stay at the end of last year, during which I was even upgraded to a “studio suite” as a Marriott gold!

  6. Well, DCS, you did better than I. For my one stay in 2015, I got nothing for this targeted promotion. Disappointing.

Ben: when do you think we’ll hear from Hyatt? I have several reservations coming up (including next week) and hope there is something coming.

  7. Slightly different than @Chris with a lower goal for number of nights but also lower bonus points.

    It’s a win-win-win:
    Register by April 15, 2016
Stay at participating properties between February 1 – May 15, 2016
Win #1: Earn 10,000 bonus points after 15 paid nights plus 2,000 bonus points each additional night, up to 20,000 bonus points
Win #2: At the same time, earn a free night after two paid stays (register separately in your online account)
Win #3: Unlock a new bonus points offer in your online account after you win #1 and #2
Every stay counts at 4,000+ hotels worldwide. Enjoy your free night and redeem points for additional stays, shopping, dining, exploring and more.

  8. I had over 150 Marriott nights last year. I did at least 4 per week every week since April (and still at it). Yet when I look at my account there’s no promotion. Is that because they think I’m hooked?

  9. Anyone know how to check your promos if you have a Ritz Carlton rewards acct vs Marriott. Took a quick look and couldn’t find a Promotions item like u always saw before got the Ritz Catlton credit card and they change me to that version.

  10. Mine is the same as Ricky’s. But a bit confusing. Since there’s a Megabonus #1 and a Megabonus #2, does that mean there are 2 free nights up for grabs or just one?

It took me a second to find mine also. Once you login, click Promotions and then click the 2 Megabonus links in the middle of the page.

  11. Not genius. The point of promotions is to drive behavior: Do this. Get that. Without telling you the objective (of the second target) in advance you don’t drive behavior. I will still have to split my stays among chains to take advantage of two KNOWN promotions.

  12. @Washeelers747

Nothing here either. Are you PP as well? Maybe the top tier elite don’t get the promotion this time around?

  13. For those that qualify for the 2 Megabonus promotions the T&C’s of the second promotion state:

“Marriott Rewards members who receive this offer may earn rewards for two promotions during the same period.”

So you can register for both

  14. I am logged into my account and still nothing comes up for promotions. I took advantage of the fall megabonus and got all 20,000 points.

    Suggestions?

  15. platinum and no mega-bonus for me either. I have 4 stays coming up at Marriott’s for conferences; it would be nice to get some bonus!

  16. If you don’t see the promo, be sure your profile is set to earn points not miles. I didn’t see a MB promo initially but as soon as I switched to earning points it appeared.

  17. Mine was total crap.

Congratulations — you’ve unlocked another MegaBonus offer, for 2,500 bonus points on your next stay.
    See Details
It’s your extra win. Here’s how to get it:
    Register by 02/22/16
Stay one time at participating properties by 04/30/16
    Earn 2,500 bonus points
Redeem your points for additional stays at 4,000+ hotels worldwide — plus shopping, dining, exploring and more.

  18. Is the win #3 a joke? After win #1 and win #2 you get to be a regular member and get regular points like always? Win #3 is normal points. Or am I missing something?
