Not to interrupt the narrative, but I’m jumping in the middle of Ben’s epic ’round the world’ trip using American miles to tell you about my (comparatively small) portion of the trip. We were scheduled to fly the inaugural A380 flight from Abu Dhabi to New York together, and while I had originally planned on a longer trip, some changes at home (aka learning last-minute that I’d be having a dozen over for Thanksgiving in my loft apartment) meant that I had to shorten the trip dramatically if I still wanted to go.

I went ahead and canceled my original outbound arrangements, and then watched space. On the 10th nonstop award availability opened up from Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi for the afternoon of the 20th, which sounded perfect, so I locked that in. I was able to add the connecting flight from San Diego a few days before departure, which made for easy flights.

In the end, my full itinerary was as follows:

Overall, this itinerary cost 180,000 American AAdvantage miles, plus $46.30 in fees. I also booked one night at the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi — I needed the Hyatt stay credit and they had Points+Cash availability. As a bonus it meant I could spend the day at the beach, which seemed like a win all-around.

None of these products are particularly new to OMAAT, so rather than doing individual posts I thought I’d throw the highlights together in one big post. After all, it was a whirlwind trip for me, so maybe we can try and recreate that experience. 😉

San Diego to Los Angeles

I’m not sure if it’s directly related to the closure of the commuter terminal at Lindbergh Field, but American has all-new planes on the San Diego > Los Angeles route now.

These jets are operated for American Eagle by Compass Air, and they are just delightful little planes. First class has a 1-2 configuration, which is surprisingly spacious.

Seriously, there’s more leg room here than on some of the mid-con products:

Boarding was quick, given the plane isn’t that big, though the chipper flight attendant still had time to deliver pre-departure beverages of choice and take drink orders for the flight, and after the usual wait we were ready to takeoff.

My favorite feature of this route though is the scenery. The lower altitude is great for checking out the coastline, and on a nice day the views are magical.

Apologies in advance for the glare on the photos — it was a gorgeous day, which was fun for looking out the window, but a bit problematic for photography.

Actual flight time is only something like 23 minutes, and it’s super fun. I’ve actually been finding excuses to fly between the two cities! I loved flying up and down the coast even when the planes were old and junky, so the updated product just makes this extra nice.

Which helps, because the situation at LAX is a little abysmal.

Transiting LAX

So I actually sorta love connecting through LA during the holidays (wait, what?) because the main American terminal has such a fun vintage vibe.

Combine the garlands, twinkly lights, and the Bing Crosby/Andrews Sisters carols on repeat, and the whole place starts to remind me a bit of the glory days of the jet age when having separate terminals for each airline was cutting-edge and desirable.

Of course, for connecting traffic in this decade, those jet-age airports couldn’t be less convenient. And I think I’ve found the worst possible transit situation.

The American Eagle terminal at LAX is basically a trailer out in the middle of nowhere. It’s closer to the United maintenance hangers than to anything passengers might want to go to, and there aren’t any pedestrian routes. So once you arrive at the Eagle terminal, you have to take a bus to the main terminal to even be able to exit the airport.

Which, I mean, at least they have a plan for that.

What they don’t have a plan for, as you can see by the new poster installed in the Eagle terminal, is getting over to Tom Bradley International Terminal.

I realize that a quantity of text and two bullet points suggests the appearance of a plan, but really the best option they have is to travel to the main American terminal (T4), then walk your happy self the rest of the way, which means leaving the secure area and re-clearing security.

There is a shuttle for Qantas passengers from T4 to TBIT, and supposedly a shuttle directly from the Eagle terminal to TBIT for Cathay Pacific passengers. But neither applied to me in this case.

Which is okay, because the shuttle bus is fun.

A little bit like ice road truckers at time, but still fun. People in the US aren’t really used to bus gates, and the shuttle always seems to have people giggling at being on the tarmac, which makes me smile.

And it’s a good thing the bus can bring a smile to so many, because this next part is lame.

It’s not that far of a walk, but it is a pretty acrid one. The exhaust situation along that roadway is gross, and the whole setup is a little embarrassing, in my opinion. American is starting to send domestic flights out of TBIT as well, so hopefully they’ll implement a broader solution for airside connections shortly.

With that part of the adventure out of the way, I stopped by the Etihad counter to grab my boarding pass. The queue for economy check-in was lengthy, but neither the first nor business class lines had a wait.

Check-in was quick, and I was soon making my way upstairs to security. TBIT doesn’t have pre-check, though there are fast-track lanes for premium cabins. Those still feed into the main queue eventually though, so I’m not sure there’s much benefit.

Fortunately/unfortunately, TSA over at TBIT seems to be taking the “PreCheck for EVERYONE” approach these days. Shoes on, leave everything in your bag, remove belts and everything from your pockets has been the mantra the past few times I’ve gone through security there.

So at least the line was fast.

Etihad uses the Star Alliance lounge in Los Angeles, which is essentially unchanged from when Ben was there last year. The buffet is a bit more limited in the afternoons, and the lounge agents were actively encouraging everyone to go to the business class lounge for a better selection.

But I wasn’t that hungry, and was able to get a ton of work done, so it was a successful lounge visit overall.

Etihad 777 First Class Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi

I arrived at the gate about 45 minutes prior to departure to discover that not only had boarding not started, the crew wasn’t even on-board, despite showing an on-time departure.

We eventually boarded, in a very chaotic process. Tom Bradley is a beautiful terminal, but it sure doesn’t give the airlines much space to organize boarding zones!

This flight was operated by a Boeing 777-200LR, which features eight first class suites, spread across two rows in a 1-2-1 configuration. This isn’t a new product for Etihad, but they did have the “refreshed” blankets and pillows with the desert mosaic motif:

The other passengers on this flight were an absolute cast of characters:

1A, 1D, & 1G — Three “rich kids of Instagram” for lack of a better term. They obviously came from money, judging by the Gucci and Hermes flashing everywhere, and the complete lack of public social awareness that is generally associated with the very spoiled. They were obnoxious throughout the entire flight, and were horribly rude to the crew. Just ridiculous.

1K — An older gentleman who was Clearly Important. Everyone spoke to him with tremendous deference, and he had several “attaches” in business class who would come up to check and make sure he had everything he needed, and was being treated well. About every ten minutes. The entire flight.

2A — Another gentleman who also had people in business class. I’m pretty sure these were adult children though, as they would wander up and take half a roll, etc. I’m telling you guys, the people watching was SO GOOD on this flight.

2D — Innocuous business-type who raised the divider as soon as it was allowed and then slept the entire flight.

2G — Me!

2K — A woman about my age, who may have been involved in some kind of fashion/media. She apparently booked her flight on the way to the airport, was only going for a few days, etc. We exchanged lots of fun glances at the antics of our fellow passengers throughout the flight.

Suffice it to say, with all that entertainment, I never touched the IFE.

As everyone was getting settled, beverages were delivered (just water for me), along with towels and dates:

Arabic coffee was then offered, which I didn’t have a chance to grab a picture of.

When comparing Etihad to Emirates, it’s worth noting that Emirates makes a much grander production of everything the coffee tradition. Not only is the coffee itself superior to that on Etihad, but the flight attendants are trained on the art of pouring and serving the coffee, and it’s a much better presentation. The dates on Emirates are a higher quality as well, I think.

Amenity kits and pajamas were distributed, along with menus for the flight.

After takeoff I ordered a glass of champagne, which was served with Etihad’s usual assortment of nuts, olives, and veggie crisps:

The amuse bouche followed, which was a delicious portion of roast duck.

I then ordered the mezze as a starter, which the chef made his best attempt to plate in a non-offensive way. (Seriously Etihad, this is an easy thing to fix, you should.)

This was followed by a lemon sorbet:

And then I’d selected the grilled beef “with whatever else” as my entree, along with a glass of the Shiraz. Both were quite nice.

The onboard Chef had been fun and engaging throughout the flight (perhaps in sympathy for the more difficult passengers), so when it came time for dessert I asked him to just surprise me.

Which may have been a mistake.

He brought a bowl with strawberry and caramel ice creams, accompanied by fresh strawberries and mangoes. And while I like all those things separately…

It was an interesting combo, let’s put it that way.

Despite our late departure we weren’t too late getting in to Abu Dhabi. We parked at a remote stand, and a car met the gentleman from 1K and two of his attendants, with the remainder of the first class passengers being allocated a separate bus. Immigration was quick, and it wasn’t long before I was in my Etihad-chauffeured car en route to the Park Hyatt.

Ben and I have both reviewed the Park Hyatt extensively in the past, so if you want to get a feel for the resort you’ll want to look over those:

We’ve always had suites at this property though, so I thought it might be helpful to share some photos of the more-or-less standard room. I think I may have been upgraded to a room with a better view, but the rooms are otherwise the same.

The room had many of the same furnishings as the suites, just on a smaller scale. The door opened to a small entryway, which either led left to the closet and bathroom, or straight ahead to the minibar and desk

The bathroom was gorgeous, with a wood-paneled closet, double sinks, rainforest shower, and a fabulous soaking tub.

The bedroom could be accessed directly through the bathroom, and featured a comfy bed, chaise, and large desk.

The room had nice views over the resort and the Gulf, and was very large for a base room (nearly 600 square feet).

While I almost always choose points as my Diamond amenity, this time I selected the food and wine option, and a lovely antipasto plate was delivered with a half-bottle of wine shortly after I got settled in.

The following morning I had a working breakfast, then spent the bulk of the day down at the beach, as the weather was just too perfect.

I was also able to do my Thanksgiving grocery shopping from the beach and have everything delivered to my very surprised husband, because living in the future is amazing.

Overall

I know this was a ridiculously fast trip, but I’m glad to have done it. Being able to snag convenient flights at the last minute certainly made it easier, and there are certainly worse ways to spend a weekend!

  1. I flew AUH-SFO in F a week ago and had the same menu and very pleasant crew. Despite of reading about the Jetihad food and service is lacking I suspect the upgrade in soft product has already happened before the scheduled hard product upgrade.

  2. I’ve always wondered what the rich kids would be like on these kind of flights, surprisingly never run into any in First. Though I suppose I should be thankful, they sound terrible.

I havent been through that terminal in years and it sounds horrible which is funny considering how busy it is and I thought SEA was bad, it is trust me I live here. Ive read enough of Ben’s reports to see that Etihad is no where near as good as Emirates. Sounds like you had fun and that hotel looks really nice the pic at night was excellent and I was surprised at how nice the grounds looked. Thanks for sharing and hope Thanksgiving worked out

  6. @ Rand — At least Sea-Tac is all connected airside! That’s the main challenge with airports like LAX/SFO/JFK, in my opinion.

  7. @ James K. — Hah, well, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve spent an average of 250 nights a year on the road since 2010 to have the kind of mileage balances where that seems like a reasonable thing to do. So there are tradeoffs 🙂

  8. Spoiled rich kids are still preferable to removes shoes/stinky feet guy, laughing out loud at IFE guy, and guy who gets up every 20 minutes to open overhead bins.

  9. Very nice report. I was at LAX Friday night (arriving AA) and waiting for the hotel bus, and the exhaust fumes were real bad.

    I find it more pleasant to walk on the upper deck between T4 and TBIT. If no baggage to claim, go up the escalator at gate 44 and walk through the terminal, past the Admiral’s club and then take the escalator by TSA to the check-in level (not baggage). Then when you arrive at TBIT you are at the check-in/security check level.

    If luggage to claim, then there is an escalator to the upper deck near baggage claim.

    Of course, all this will be solved with the connector between T4 and TBIT opens late this year.

  11. What to do in Abu Dhabi? Hope you went out of the hotel and walked and pressed some hands. How about street food?

  12. @Tiffany, I had low expectation after reading many negative reviews on the Jetihad which may help on a very enjoyable flight. The seat is comfortable and with a thin padding on the flat bed I had no trouble sleeping for 9 hrs during the flight. IFE has plenty of movies I’d like to watch (Martian, Bridge of Spies). Overall it may not compare to the EY A380 apt or SG F suite. However I felt the experience is on par with JL F suite or maybe even Cathay F. I value the privacy provided by the closed door more than the Dom and caviar so people who seek these things may reach a different conclusion.

  13. Tiffany, I noticed on the picture of the card in the hotel room that your last name is Funk. That’s a very unusual name. I work with a guy whose last name is Funk here in Arizona. I never thought I would find another person with that last name.

  14. @ Randy — That’s a really good point. I hadn’t even thought about that until I was 95% of the way to TBIT and being asphyxiated by the fumes.

  15. Btw, you can also order things off the menu depending on what’s available in the kitchen. Both me and my travel partner ordered something not on the menu and the chef prepared them to our liking.

  16. @ Buddy M. — Hah, I get that all the time! Apparently it’s actually a very common surname in some parts of Germany (and thus in areas where Germans have immigrated). The first time my husband and Ben’s dad met they had an hour conversation about the Wolgadeutsche and family history, so it’s maybe not as unusual as I had previously thought.

  17. What kind of person buys an international F (presumably revenue from the context) on the way to the airport? And how spoiled of a kid do you need to be to pay ~$4k to fly across the Atlantic. Like how rich do you need to be? Those are not rhetorical questions btw 😛

  18. @ Abdelrahim Abdallah — I presume revenue as well, and sorta got the impression that it was purchased for her, so maybe a corporate account with better pricing?

    And I’m going with “pretty spoiled.” The average revenue cost of a first class Etihad ticket from Los Angeles to Abu Dhabi seems to hover around ~$24k (or a “reasonable” $12k ex-AUH), so…

  19. Nice trip report! I’ll be connecting in Abu Dhabi next month for about 22 hours before taking the A380 flight out at about 3am.

    Any suggestions as to what one can do in Abu Dhabi late at night before catching such a late flight?

  20. @ Craig — Thanks! Assuming you’re going to have a hotel for at least part of that, I’d get some sleep, then spend the early evening at one of the restaurants in the area (I like those at the Souk Qaryat Al Beri for the waterside dining and sunset views of the mosque), then head over to the Mosque, which is open until 10PM most nights.

    If you want to stay out even later, then just switch the order. There are lots of restaurants and bars open quite late in Abu Dhabi.

  21. Hi Tiffany! I have an upcoming trip in Feb to Maldives via Abu Dhabi originating from LAX (Etihad). I used AA miles/reward. I live in San Diego and would love to add on the SAN-LAX flight. There was no award availability when I booked the itinerary last year. After reading your trip report, I now see award availability! Will there be a fee assessed to change the originating city to add onto my existing itinerary? I do not have any elite status with AA.

  22. @ Kathy — Unfortunately if you don’t have elite status the fee would be $150. At that price, you’re probably better off just buying the flight, as tickets are often ~$60.

  23. Wait – AA has made VERY public their plans for LAX – they are building an airside connector between T4 and the TBIT. If you look outside, you’ll see that construction on this is QUITE advanced. Once complete, AA has announced that they’ll have preferential wide body use to about 4 gates in TBIT and they will reconfigure their gates in T4. As somebody who seems to travel a lot and seems aware of AA it surprises me you’re unaware of this, or at least profess not to be in this report.

    As for Jetihad, the service onboard is now fully EY (menus, bedding, flight attendants). The first class is nice but just older and cloth instead of leather seats. The exact same IFE as on normal Etihad. Business Class has the herringbone seats. Economy is economy. That said, EY has announced they’ll be completely phasing out Jetihad (SFO sometime in April, JFK by early summer), and replacing those planes with full EY airplanes. So, it’ll be gone soon.

    Lots of great things to do in Abu Dhabi. I lived there for over a year and miss it. My favorite things are the beaches on Saadiyat – simply beautiful and world class. But Friday brunches are an amazing experience as well – a must do for any visitor. And visiting the mosque is incredible. Highly recommend.

  26. Hi Tiffany – you write that you took the EY provided chauffeur service on arrival, which I have also used while on a paid ticket. But I thought they had stopped doing that with redemptions; I guess I’m wrong? I know this was EY but I’ll be flying EK into DBX in F on an Alaska redemption in April (connecting to MCT after a one day stop) and just figured I couldn’t use the chauffeur service. Do you know what the state of that with EK is? I’m arriving in F and then continuing in F a day later.

    Great report. The RKOI reference was pretty perfect. I’ve run into a few of them along the way and I just roll my eyes 🙂

  27. @ Stuart — Etihad still allows chauffeur bookings on award tickets, it’s technically Emirates that doesn’t.

    That being said, I’ve had good luck in going to the arrivals desk for Emirates in Dubai and showing my boarding pass. I’ve never been denied car service, though it of course depends on the agent you get. It only works on trips from the airport though.

We arrive in F and leave in J (there’s no F on their A350 as I’m sure you know). Are we going to be able to access the F lounge in Doha? It’s a BA redemption.

    As a SAN native, I too have always loved the SAN-LAX flights. Back in the day, it was easy to take AA or WA (Western Airlines, the oooooonnnllllyyyy way to fly!) DC-10s for the short hop. And WA even managed their signature champagne service in F.

    Even more fun was flying Golden West or Imperial (RIP x2) CLD-LAX or SNA. You could almost reach out and touch the reactor containment domes at San Onofre!

  30. @ Stuart — I don’t think so, actually. I believe you only get access to the F lounge on connecting itineraries if the F flight was more than five hours long. But the business class lounge is lovely, and I’m sure you’ll have a great time!

    What do you think about doha? My routing is such that I have about 24 hour layover. But I can get it shortened to 9 hour. I have al mourjan lounge access. I am debating which layover to pick.

    Still, Etihad are decent enough, most of the time (better than US carriers certainly).

    That Blueberry crepe on the menu sounds lovely (never had that turn up before, alas).

    Caribbean Sunrise is my fav Etihad First drink – so refreshing.
