Reader RolkaNation asked the following question in the “Ask Lucky” forum:
I’ve had the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express for a long time, but never the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express. I have a fed tax ID for a small startup so can now finally get biz cards.
My question is…..if I get the SPG Biz now (Oct) will I get the 2 stay/5 night credit now for 2015 earning and then just a couple months later again in Jan or Feb for 2016 earning year?
Thank you for your insight!
This is a great question, which I figure some others could use a reminder of as well, as the end of the year approaches.
Elite stay/night credits on the SPG Amex
For those of you not aware, the SPG Personal Amex and SPG Business Amex each offer two elite stay credits and five elite night credits towards Starwood status annually. In other words, if you have both cards, that gets you four elite stay credits and 10 elite night credits towards status at the beginning of the year. That’s a nice jumpstart to SPG Platinum status, which I consider to be one of the best elite tiers out there.
So is it too late to still pick up this perk for 2015? Absolutely not! If you apply for either card now you’d get the elite stay and night credits for 2015, and then you’d get them again before February, 2016, for next year (and then before the same date for each subsequent year).
Why I value this perk
Given that I live in hotels full time, you might ask yourself “wait a second, why would you get any use out of this benefit?”
Well, I do have both the SPG Personal Amex and SPG Business Amex. Even before I lived in hotels full time, I managed to achieve Platinum status. But it’s worth keeping in mind the incremental benefits SPG offers above qualifying for Platinum status:
- Qualifying for Platinum takes 25 stays or 50 nights
- If you earn 50 elite qualifying nights, you get 10 Suite Night Awards
- If you earn 75 elite qualifying nights, you earn an extra Starpoint per dollar spent & Your24
- If you earn 100 elite qualifying nights, you qualify for Ambassador status
I used a Suite Night Award to confirm a Marvelous Suite at the W Taipei
Before I moved into hotels full time, I typically qualified for Platinum status on stays. Having the two versions of the SPG card gave me an extra 10 elite qualifying nights, which was enough to get me the 10 Suite Night Awards. I value those immensely, so to me those alone justify the annual fees on the cards.
What benefit am I getting out of the cards this year? They’ll likely be the difference between me earning Ambassador status and not. I’m at 90 nights for the year, and have another 10 nights booked, so will easily make Ambassador status. I’m not sure I would have made it without the 10 elite nights I received from the SPG Personal Amex and SPG Business Amex.
It’s not too late to earn bonus elite stay and night credits for 2015 through the SPG Personal Amex and SPG Business Amex. Keep in mind that these cards were refreshed earlier this year, so come with several cool new benefits. The business card even comes with access to Sheraton club lounges, which is a pretty awesome perk.
