Through November 6, 2015, IHG Rewards Club is offering up to a 60% bonus on purchased points

IHG Rewards Club is offering a tiered bonus on purchased points. The more points you purchase the bigger the bonus, as follows:

  • 1,000 – 19,000 points = 30% Bonus
  • 20,000 – 29,000 points = 40% Bonus
  • 30,000 – 39,000 points = 50% Bonus
  • 40,000 – 60,000 points = 60% Bonus

On top of that, as usual, the cost to acquire points varies based on how many you purchase, as follows:

  • 1,000 – 10,000 points for $13.50 per 1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points for $12.50 per 1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points for $11.50 per 1,000 points

Given the above, you’ll get the best cent per point ratio if you purchase at least 40,000 points. If you max out the promotion and purchase 60,000 points, you’d receive a total of 96,000 points at a cost of $690. That’s a cost of ~0.72 cents per IHG Rewards Club point.

To put this promotion in the context of past promotions:

So as you can see, we have seen up to a 100% bonus on purchased points a couple of times this year, though there’s no way to know for sure when such a promotion will return.

Is it worth buying IHG points with a 60% bonus?

IHG Rewards Club charges at most 50,000 points per free night, so if buying points that means you’d be paying $360 per night f0r a stay at one of their top hotels.

If you’re a fan of IHG hotels, that’s a heck of a value, given that many retail for $500+ per night. So I wouldn’t speculatively buy points at this rate, but there’s definitely value to be had.

Redeem IHG Rewards Club points at the InterContinental Thalasso Bora Bora

It can be an especially good value if you’re able to redeem points at a PointBreaks hotel, whereby you pay only 5,000 points per night. At a rate of ~0.72 cents per point, that’s like paying ~$36 per free night, which is an incredible value.

Also keep in mind that if you have the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card you get a 10% refund on all points redeemed, up to 100,000 points per year. That even further lowers your redemption costs and increases the value of your points.

Alternative to buying IHG points through promotion

Do keep in mind that there’s a way to indirectly purchase IHG Rewards Club points for 0.7 cents each, though it comes with some risks. Personally I’d rather “legitimately” purchase IHG Rewards Club points for ~0.72 cents each than go through the effort and take the risk of purchasing them indirectly for ~0.7 cents each.

But it is something to be aware of.

Which credit card to buy points with?

IHG Rewards Club points purchases are processed by points.com, so wouldn’t qualify as hotel spend for the purposes of your credit card. Therefore you’ll want to use a credit card which maximizes your return on everyday spend, like the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card or Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Card from American Express.

Bottom line

There are many instances where it could make sense to pick up IHG Rewards Club points for ~0.7 cents each, whether you’re looking to redeem for a PointBreaks stay or for a stay at one of IHG’s top properties (which go for 50,000 points per night).

That being said, we’ve seen better deals on the purchase of points in the past, so unless you have an immediate use for the points, I probably wouldn’t buy IHG Rewards Club points through this promotion.

(Tip of the hat to Steve)

  2. +1, no status, no recent activity.

I’ve bought with 100% bonus in the past and no good use in my mind, so I will skip this time.

  3. Not really relevant, but I got an email from IHG today. Part of it was “And it gets even better — you’re currently 71 nights away from reaching our highest membership level, Spire Elite”. Am I missing something?
