Through October 15, 2015, Club Carlson is offering up to a 30% bonus on purchased points.
The promotion is valid if you purchase at least 10,000 Gold Points in one transaction. Club Carlson limits you to purchasing 40,000 points per account per calendar year, so factoring in the 30% bonus, you can buy a maximum of 52,000 points through this promotion. The 52,000 points would cost you $280, meaning they’re charging ~0.54 cents per point.
To frame this promotion in the context of past ones, this is one of the weaker promotions we’ve seen:
- In August 2015 we saw Club Carlson offer a 50% bonus on purchased points
- In November 2014 we saw Club Carlson offer a 100% bonus on purchased points
- In June 2014 we saw Club Carlson offer a 75% bonus on purchased points
So not only is this bonus one of the weakest we’ve seen in terms of the cent per point ratio, but Club Carlson has also devalued their program considerably since then:
- The second night free benefit was eliminated on Club Carlson’s co-branded credit card
- The cost of redemptions at many of Club Carlson’s top hotels increased, due to some award category adjustments
Personally I value Club Carlson points somewhere in the range of 0.35-0.4 cents each. That being said, with the right redemptions in mind you can absolutely get more than value out of your points than that.
Also keep in mind that while you’re limited to purchasing 40,000 points (pre-bonus) per account per calendar year, you can always purchase points for multiple accounts, and then combine the points in those accounts for free. All members can combine points within a household, and elite members can combine points with anyone. Those with the Club Carlson Premier Rewards Visa Signature® Card get automatic elite status in the Club Carlson program.
The full terms of the promotion are as follows:
All Point Purchases: Price includes all applicable fees. GST/HST will be charged to Canadian residents. Gold Points purchased using this option are non-refundable and will post within 2 to 5 days. All Points Purchase Terms and Conditions and all standard Club Carlson Program Terms and Conditions apply to your purchase and use of Gold Points. This offer applies to Gold Points purchased between September 15, 2015 and October 15, 2015 only. Club Carlson members will receive a point bonus equal to 30% for purchases of 10,000 to 40,000 points. Bonus points will not be applied to the yearly 40,000 point purchase maximum. Bonus points and purchased points will be posted to the member’s Club Carlson account as one transaction within 2-5 days of purchase. This offer does not apply to points purchased as a gift. In addition, the purchase and use of Gold Points are subject to the Points Purchase Terms and Conditions and the Club Carlson Terms and Conditions.
This is one of the weaker bonuses we’ve seen on the purchase of Club Carlson points, and for that matter the program being devalued doesn’t help either. So personally this isn’t a rate at which I’d purchase points. As always, with a specific, short-term use in mind, it could make sense to purchase Club Carlson points.
