Update: The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN has exciting new benefits, and a great new limited time offer. Learn more about the current offer here.
One of the things I love about American Express is that the annual fees on virtually all cards more than pay for themselves. And that’s outside of the actual “published” benefits on a card. Specifically, American Express also offers promotions like Small Business Saturday and Amex Offers, whereby members can get quite a bit in credits out of cards. Through Amex Offers I’ve taken advantage of deals lately for $150 off my AT&T bill, $75 off a Hilton stay, and a $20 Amazon credit, just to give a few examples.
But Small Business Saturday has been equally, if not more, lucrative. It’s a promotion American Express has offered for several years, whereby on the Saturday after Thanksgiving you can receive statement credits when using your American Express cards at a small business.
It’s intended to encourage consumers to shop at small businesses between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Last year the promotion offered a $10 credit after spending $10 at a small business, and each card was eligible for up to three credits. So to me that was like a $30 credit per card. And keep in mind that many American Express cards let you add additional users at no extra cost, and historically even those card members are eligible for Small Business Saturday.
Anyway, it shouldn’t come as a surprise, but American Express has announced that Small Business Saturday will return in 2015. Not surprisingly, Small Business Saturday will return on Saturday, November 28, 2015.
The exact details of the promotion haven’t been announced yet, as right now they just have info geared at small businesses that may want to participate in the promotion. The exact terms of the promotion have varied over the past several years, though one thing which has been consistent is that it’s rewarding for consumers.
This is a good time to start thinking about which cards you’ll have open in November, and also whether you have additional card members on an account.
In my case, I have the following cards issued by American Express:
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express
- The Platinum Card® from American Express
- The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN
- Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express
- Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card
So between those cards and the additional cardmembers I have on the cards, I should be getting back quite a bit in credits from American Express. Though it’ll be a busy Saturday!
I’ll post again once we have the full details of this year’s promotion.
Are you planning on taking part in this year’s Small Business Saturday?
