Weekly Review: July 18, 2015

Hello from San Diego! Goodness the weather in California is nice, even for those of us who turn into lobsters from just thinking about going outside.

It has been a very busy week, but I’ve been able to spend time with friends as well. I might just get used to being on the ground at this rate. šŸ˜‰

Review: The Parker Palm Springs Hotel

Parker-Palm-Springs-Hotel-11

Iā€™ve never been to Palm Springs, so a friend in LA agreed to join meĀ there last weekend.

The Parker isĀ a gorgeous, secluded property. I know itā€™s not everyoneā€™s style, but I loved just about everything about the decor and design of the hotel.

It was quirkyā€¦ really, really quirky.

Which Credit Cards Do I Use For Each Bonus Category?

GroceriesWeā€™ve seen quite a few great new cards enter the marketplace lately, so my credit card spend strategy is even more diversified than ever before.

In the past there were only at most a fewĀ cards I used for everyday spend, so I instinctively knewĀ which card to use for each purchase.

Nowadays I often find myself pondering my card choicesĀ with each purchase, given that several cards have similarly good returns in bonus categories.

I figured Iā€™d prepare a post with my current credit card spend strategy by category.

2015 US Open SPG Moments Packages Now Available

SPG-AmEx-US-Open05Iā€™ve written in the past about SPG Moments, whereby you can redeem Starpoints for tickets at sold out events including concerts, sporting events, cultural activities, etc.

As Iā€™ve explained before, this really isnā€™t a gimmick. SPG Moments not only represents a great value in many cases compared to what youā€™d pay for a similar experience in cash, but in many cases it can get you VIP access to otherwise sold out events.

I’ve attended the US Open with my mother a few times now, and SPG always does a great job of hosting the Luxury Suites and VIP experiences. If you’re a tennis fan, or have Starwood points to burn, this is potentially a really fun redemption option.

I’m trying to be better about taking timeĀ off every week to recharge, so am looking forward toĀ spending some time away from the internet this afternoon. I have some fun things coming next week though, including what might be my favorite contest ever.

What are you guysĀ up to?

Comments

  1. Have you considered writing a post about how you and Tiffany, Nick and Travis met? I am nosy, so I wanna know šŸ˜‰

  2. Ditto @Chris. Not sure when you set up this post, but it was thundering and lightning here from about 6:00am this morning.

  3. Hey, if you’re free come join us for Mexican food in La Mesa on Sunday. FT San Diego meetup.

  4. I think I registered the same confusion as @Chris and @sdfamily when I started reading this post: HUH?! A friend of mine sent me pictures from SD Pride and it was an absolute TORRENTIAL downpour! I didn’t feel like gloating back to him that we hit 88 (again) in Seattle today considering how desperately California needs the water.

  5. Just returned from two weeks in Asia: outbound LAX-NRT-SIN (Suites)-PVG(First), and PEK-SIN(First)-SIN-NRT-LAX(Suites) on the return. Thanks, Ben, for sharing the knowledge that helped me to book these great rides to/from Asia!
