I’ve written extensively about Silvercar, including about the rental experience at LAX. Silvercar is an innovative rental car company available at close to a dozen airports, with only one type of car in their fleet, the Audi A4.
Each A4 is equipped with free GPS, wifi, and satellite radio, and Silvercar has a fair fuel plan, whereby they’ll fill up your tank for the “market price” plus a $5 refueling fee.
I feel like they charge a reasonable premium for what they offer, though admittedly everyone values things like this differently.
Silvercar frequently offers promotions for discounted rentals. For example, through the end of the year they’re offering both new and existing users a $50 discount off a rental of at least two days, using promo code FTU50.
But Silvercar also has a new promotion for first time renters, which will probably be especially interesting to many of you (especially since you can always use the $50 discount code on a subsequent rental). They’re offering one free rental day on a rental of at least two days when using promotion code LOUNGEBUDDY (this can be stacked with the referral promotion, which I’ll discuss below, though not with any other promotions).
This promotion will net you the greatest savings when your rental would be most expensive, which will typically be on weekdays.
For example, a weekday rental at LAX can cost as much as $89 per day plus taxes and fees:
So with your free day, you can knock the cost of a two day rental to $50 per day, including all taxes and fees:
Keep in mind that in addition to being able to use a promotion code, Silvercar has a great referral program, which they improved earlier in the year. If you’re referred to Silvercar and make your first rental, both the person referring and person being referred will receive $25 in cash.
If you haven’t yet rented from Silvercar, simply go to the sign-up page on silvercar.com, and enter the “Referral Code” at the bottom of the page. If you’d like to use my code (which I’d of course be incredibly grateful for) it’s BSCHLAPPIG, though feel free to post yours below as well, and someone else can use it.
If you’re the type of person who says “a car is a car, I don’t care what I drive,” then Silvercar probably isn’t for you. But if you’re looking to pay a reasonable premium for a car which is actually pleasant to drive, then Silvercar is for you.
And even if you don’t think you value the experience all that much, it’s worth giving them a shot at least once, given how much value you can get out of your first rental. In the above example, you pay $100 for a two day rental, and then get $25 upon completion of your first rental. That’s ~$38 per day, which is pretty darn good for a weekday rental at LAX.
