You May Still Be Eligible For 3x Points On Dining With The Citi ThankYou Premier Card

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. Update: This offer for the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card is expired. Learn more about the current offer here.

Since early last week there’s an improved sign-up bonus on the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card. The card presently offers 40,000 bonus ThankYou Points after $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. Plus the $95 annual fee is waived for the first 12 months.

The launch of the improved sign-up bonus coincided with the card undergoing a change in benefits, specifically when it comes to the category bonuses on the card. Under the current structure, the card offers the following category bonuses:

  • 3x points on travel
  • 3x points on gas
  • 2x points on dining out and entertainment
  • 1x point on all other purchases

Before April 19, 2015, the card offered 3x ThankYou Rewards points on dining and entertainment, though didn’t offer 3x points on travel and gas.

Reader kneemuh forwarded me a mailer he received from Citi in regards to the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card, which in part read as follows:

Since you recently applied for the card, you will earn 3x points per $1 spent on dining out and entertainment for one year from the date you became a Citi ThankYou Premier cardmember. After that, you will earn 2 points per $1 spent on purchases in these categories.

I wasn’t sure if this was a targeted promotion or something, so I sent a secure message to Citi, and it seems this is actually a standard thing they’re doing for those that applied for the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card on/before April 18, 2015:

Your account earns 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on purchases for travel including gas and 2 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on purchases for dining out and entertainment. All other eligible purchases earn 1 point per $1 spent.

Customers who have a date became member from 4/19/14 to 4/18/15 will continue to earn 3X on dining out and entertainment for one year from the date the customer became a Citi ThankYou Premier member.

If there is any way we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

So if you became a Citi ThankYou® Premier Card member on/before April 18, 2015, you’ll continue to earn 3x points on dining and entertainment for one year from when you became a member. In other words, you get the best of both worlds when it comes to category bonuses for the time being. Since I applied for the card in late March, I’m eligible! Kudos to Citi on this generous move.

If you apply for the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card now you obviously won’t earn the 3x points on dining and entertainment, though this is still an extremely lucrative card, both in terms of the 50,000 point sign-up bonus, as well as the bonus categories of 3x points on travel and gas, and 2x points on dining and entertainment. It really does give the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card a run for its money.

  1. Hey Lucky,

Thanks for the post on this. I got the Thank You premier card in January and also received one of these mailers. I called the number listed on the flyer for questions just the other day to verify that I was getting the 3x travel in addition to the grandfathered 3x dining & entertainment. Based on the mailer I wasn’t sure if I’d be getting 3x on all categories or if it would only be the old categories and thee new travel 3x would kick in after that year.

I asked what my 3x bonus categories were and the phone agent told me that my account was only showing 3x travel and 2x dining & entertainment.

I’m thinking either the agent doesn’t know or that perhaps I lost the extra year of 3x dining & entertainment when Citi matched me to the new 50k signup bonus instead of making me wait until my second year with the card to get the other 30k points like the original bonus offer.

I’d call back or send a secure message but don’t want to give them the impression I only care about the bonus points lest they flag me as a churner.

    Any thoughts?

  2. I believe this stems from the federal rule that they can’t change terms in the first 12 months of card membership (this was mainly created to protect consumers from interest rate hikes). So anyone who got the card before the changes were announced should be good.

  3. @AdamH – If that’s true, shouldn’t all those who signed up for the Club Carlson Card within that last 12 months be entitled to the “Free Last Night” benefit until their anniversary date?

  4. @ Andrew — Hmmm, for what it’s worth I matched offers as well and sent a secure message, so I don’t think there’s any harm in sending a secure message to follow up. Please report back!

  5.
