US Airways Awards Once Again Bookable Online Using Avios

Last week I wrote about an issue whereby US Airways awards weren’t bookable using Avios through British Airways’ website.

For the most part US Airways awards continued to be bookable through British Airways’ call center, though given their outrageously hold long times, that wasn’t much of a consolation prize. My guess was that the glitch had something to do with US Airways aligning fare classes with American a couple of weeks back, and problems stemming from that.

Anyway, it looks like this glitch has finally been fixed, because as of yesterday US Airways awards are once again bookable through British Airways’ website.

As a reminder, British Airways Avios are especially compelling for shorthaul redemptions, given their distance based award chart:

651-11517,50015,00022,500

British Airways did announce a major devaluation to their Executive Club program, though the good news is that the three single best shorthaul economy redemption values remain the same:

New-Avios-Redemption-Chart

These include:

  • 4,500 Avios for a one-way economy flight of 1-650 miles
  • 7,500 Avios for a one-way economy flight of 651-1,151 miles
  • 10,000 Avios for a one-way economy flight of 1,152-2,000 miles

Bottom line

I’m happy this glitch is finally fixed. While I’m frustrated by the British Airways devaluation, I’ll continue to get a lot of value out of shorthaul redemptions on Alaska, American, and US Airways.

  1. I have found that combining an AA/US award on BA gives double the points as they are viewed as two different carriers. Is that still the case on BA? I haven’t tried in a couple months.

For instance it was IAH-MIA-PUJ, but IAH-MIA was US and the points I believe were 35k saver.

  2. I am still having issues locating flights. For example, the BA website says that there is no nonstop DCA – CLT route. Not “no availability,” but an error message essentially saying that route doesn’t exist. The issue was the same even when I tried to purchase a ticket with money through BA.com.

I’m having the same problems from DCA to places like FLL, BDA, and others.

Do you think this is still a work in progress, or does BA just not like my city?

  3. Unfortunately, I don’t believe it works quite yet. You can see availability, but if you try to proceed to the payment page it will error out.

    Getting closer though….

  4. Lucky, have you seen much or any availability of USAir business Saver (low) awards from PHL/CLT to the caribbean? They used to be widely available, at least to SJU (PHL/CLT SJU) at the 30K level (unfortunately coded as First, so requiring 3X avios) — now all those flights, even on slow Tue/Wednesdays are showing as Business Medium on USAir (50K one way, and showing as Business/First Anytime on aa.com). Maybe all flights have been booked, but seems unlikely given that I have redeemed many of these last year without problems… I was looking forward to these requiring 2X avios, not 3X 🙁

  5. Looks like you can’t book US Airways flights with cash and avios any more. I was able to book one last week. But as of now, you can only book with all avios. I wonder if it is a glitch or this feature is finally gone. Of course it would be gone any way once DM folds into AAdvantage.
