Convert Hotel Points To AAdvantage And Earn 25% Bonus

Through March 15, 2015, American is offering 25% bonus AAdvantage miles on select hotel points transfers. There’s no limit to how many times you can earn the bonus.

Bonus AAdvantage miles will post as a separate transaction within seven days of the initial transfer taking place.

The two “catches” to this promotion

As you might have noticed, there’s one major omission on the hotel partners list. Points transfers from SPG aren’t eligible for the 25% bonus, which is a shame, since it’s also one of the few hotel programs where there’s value in converting hotel points into airline miles.

There’s also one other big catch in the terms & conditions:

Conversions for hotel and air packages from eligible AAdvantage hotel participants are excluded from this offer.

Other than Starpoint transfers, one of the only other good values for converting hotel points into airline miles is Marriott’s Hotel + Air packages:

Marriott-Hotel-Air-Packages

Through Hotel + Air packages you receive a set number of free nights plus a set number of miles as part of the package. These packages are in my opinion the best use of Marriott Rewards points. But unfortunately those redemptions seem to specifically be excluded from this promotion.

Bottom line

I wouldn’t recommend taking advantage of this promotion unless you have more hotel points than you know what to do with and desperately need AAdvantage miles.

I think it’s pretty ridiculous that American runs a promotion like this while excluding the two best transfer options. I get sometimes SPG is excluded, and that’s fine, because when other airlines offer similar promotions they sometimes do the same. That being said, to exclude hotel and air packages? Really?

Comments

  1. Poor value. 90,000 Marriott points gets you two nights at the Edition in London or Miami… In the case of London, that can easily be worth at least $1,300.

  2. Do any hotel programs currently have a sale on purchased points to stack with this offer ? I guess it would only make sense of the cost works to be less than 2cents/mile?

  3. Lucky is it just me or is that hhonors transfer rate pretty good?
I have about 150k AA Points that I don’t really use
Can move about 80-90k over to HHonors (comes to about 500k) and use those to book hotels over in Europe where hyatt isn’t an option.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

  4. @ Alan — The conversions are one way. Just because that’s the rate from Hilton to American doesn’t mean the inverse is true (it’s not).
