One area where I save quite a bit of money by living in hotels is with material goods. Living out of a carry-on really gives you perspective on what material goods you need and which you don’t. It makes it really fun for my mom to try and go Christmas shopping for me (I tell her I really don’t want anything, but that doesn’t mean she’ll ever listen). 😉

That being said, I know many people spend a good amount on shopping and shipping this time of year, and the costs can add up quickly. Fortunately, American Express has several ways for cardholders to save on last-minute shipping. I’m sure I’m not the only that’s a procrastinator in general, so hopefully this is helpful to some of you.

Free 2-day shipping with your ShopRunner Membership

ShopRunner is a membership program which offers express shipping (generally 2-day) and other benefits for a subscription fee of $8.95 per month, or $79 per year. Amex cardholders (including authorized users) receive a complimentary membership, which can be shared with two household members as well.

Eligible American Express card members should include any active accounts issued by American Express, such as:

Prepaid cards and those issued by other banks that just use the American Express network for merchant processing don’t count.

The ShopRunner membership can often be stacked with other discounts and portals as well, so you can save even more.

One year of AmazonPrime for new accounts

American Express ran this promotion last year as well, and for a limited time one year of AmazonPrime is included in the welcome offer for the following cards:

Amazon Prime offers unlimited free two-day shipping, unlimited instant streaming of movies and TV shows, ad-free access to more than a million songs, and a Kindle book to borrow for free each month from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

Amex OPEN Savings

Small business cardholders of American Express are automatically enrolled in the OPEN Savings program. This offers up to 10% discounts or up to 4 extra Membership Rewards® points for every eligible dollar spent with OPEN Savings partners.

FedEx Express®, FedEx Ground®, and FedEx Freight® are all partners, and you can receive 5% back on up to $20,000 of combined Express and Ground shipping, and an additional 5% back on up to $20,000 of Freight:

Use your Business Card from American Express OPEN with FedEx Express® or FedEx Ground® shipping and automatically get a 5% discount credited to your American Express®statement or get 2 additional Membership Rewards® points on each eligible dollar spent on Qualifying Services up to $20,000 per calendar year, per Card Account with FedEx Express® and FedEx Ground® combined 5

Qualifying Services: The OPEN Savings Benefit is available on the following FedEx Express® and FedEx Ground® services purchased at FedEx: FedEx Priority Overnight®, FedEx Standard Overnight®, FedEx 2Day®, FedEx 2Day® A.M., FedEx Express Saver®, FedEx First Overnight® Freight, FedEx 1Day® Freight, FedEx 2Day® Freight, FedEx 3Day® Freight, FedEx International Priority®, FedEx International Economy®, FedEx International Priority® Freight, FedEx International Economy® Freight, FedEx Ground®, FedEx International Ground®, FedEx Home Delivery®.

Benefit not available on invoiced shipments or international duties and taxes.

I’m pretty sure most of us won’t come anywhere near those limits, but it’s potentially helpful for small business owners that spend a lot on shipping.

The two best small business credit cards from American Express for travelers are The Starwood Preferred Guest Business Card and The Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN, in my opinion.

Amex Offers For You

While this isn’t as lucrative as the above promotions, this is still a nice way to save a bit on holiday shipping.

If you have an American Express card, log into your online account, and click on “Amex Offers For You” at the bottom of the page.

AmEx-ATT-Sync-2

Most accounts should have an offer for $5 back at FedEx Office. Just click “save offer” to enroll your card.

Amex-Offers

Both of my small business cards were targeted for this offer, and the $5 should stack with the 5% OPEN rebate, in my experience.

Bottom line

We generally talk about credit cards in terms of the sign-up offers or the spending categories, but there are several “hidden” perks as well. American Express has been great about adding extra benefits for their cardholders this year, which is awesome for those able to take advantage.

How are you shipping your holiday gifts? Any other money-saving tips?

  1. That FedEx Offics doesn’t mean a FedEx Location/B & M store. It means office supplies/Office related stuff from FedEx…
If you open that link — FedEx.com/Office you got what it is…
So it’s not really related with shipping…
