Through December 21, 2014, American Express is offering an increased sign-up bonus on their personal and business versions of the Gold Delta SkyMiles Cards.

In both cases they’re offering:

  • 50,000 Delta SkyMiles if you spend $1,000 within your first three months of card membership
  • $50 statement credit if you make a Delta purchase within your first three months of card membership

The annual fee is $95, and it’s waived the first year. This sign-up bonus is substantially higher than their usual sign-up bonus, which hovers around 30,000 miles upon completing minimum spend.

This is almost identical to the offer American Express had on the card back in August.

As I explained back then, I consider this to be a very good sign-up bonus. While SkyMiles aren’t my favorite mileage currency in the world, keep in mind Delta will be allowing one-way awards for half the cost of a roundtrip as of January 1, 2015. Unfortunately it’s coming at the expense of stopovers on roundtrip awards.

One other massive improvement to SkyMiles is that they now have a functional award calendar, which makes it so much easier to search award availability.

So despite the loss of stopovers, I’d consider the changes to be a net gain.

SkyMiles continue to be extremely valuable for redemptions on some of their partner airlines, like Alitalia, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, etc., which offer some of the best products and availability in their respective markets.

If you’re an occasional Delta flyer the card comes with some other useful benefits as well, like priority boarding, a free checked bag, etc.

Bottom line

These cards aren’t especially rewarding for everyday spend, though these are very nice sign-up bonuses. If you don’t have the cards yet, I’d certainly consider signing up under this offer.

  1. Where are we with Amex and having the existing product category? I have a Delta Reserve…can I apply and get the bonus? I could use a 50k bump to my skymiles account…award space to Sydney and Tokyo (curiously both are available also on Korean…) is wide open about 10 months out…

  2. @ Garrett — Maybe someone can chime in, as I’m not sure. The terms for these cards are as follows, which is all I know:

The following is listed for the personal version of the offer:

“If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”

While the following is listed for the business version of the offer:

“Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product within the last 12 months.”

  3. I already have the Delta Amex personal one which is currently active.
Can I apply for the Business one and get 50000 miles, or is that a no no?

  4. my wife and I both already have separate business accounts. We each also had personal accounts from just over a year ago. We both just got instant approvals on the personal ones again tonight. I guess we’re not guaranteed the bonus, but the approval part was very fast

  5. I had a Delta Biz Platinum within the past 12 months, and was approved for the Delta Biz Gold now. I won’t be getting the signup bonus if they are considered the same cards. I have a hard time finding out if they are or not. Some Amex agents tell me they are the same products, others tell me they are not. Any experience?

  6. Thanks for an honest, realistic heads up (not a flashy cc peddling type some others do). As someone who has provided you my fair share of criticism, I appreciated the content.

  7. I missed this deadline, but wanted to sign up for the card.. its back down to 30k bonus sign up. Anyway i ask for the 50k?
