EVA Air Taipei To Houston Flights Starting June 19, 2015

In October I wrote about EVA Air’s latest route announcement, whereby they’ll be starting service between Taipei and Houston as of next summer. The Taiwan based carrier also said they plan to commence flights between Taipei and Chicago as of 2016, though no timeline has been announced for that.

Obviously this growth is caused by their entry into the Star Alliance last year, which is opening up a lot of new routes for them thanks to the easy feed they can get from United in the US.

Anyway, EVA Air has now published the schedule and opened reservations for their new 4x weekly Boeing 777-300ER flight between Taipei and Houston, which launched on June 19, 2015. Via airlineroute.net, the flight will operate with the following schedule:

BR52 Taipei to Houston departing 10:00PM arriving 11:25PM [Sun, Tue, Wed, Fri]
BR51 Houston to Taipei departing 1:15AM arriving 5:55AM (+1 day) [Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat]

At 14hr25min eastbound and 15hr40min westbound and nearly 8,000 miles, this is EVA Air’s furthest route.

Having another direct link between Asia and Texas is an exciting development for people in the area, especially for Star Alliance flyers.

EVA Air has a fantastic fully flat business class product with reverse herringbone seats. The service is excellent and they offer Rimowa amenity kits, pajamas, and Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame champagne (which is excellent, though they used to serve Dom Perignon).

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like EVA Air has released any award space on the new route yet.

EVA Air award availability was amazing when they first joined the Star Alliance, though it has gotten progressively worse over time. As of August they’re actually not making longhaul business class award space available to partner airlines more than ~90 days before departure. And nowadays most business class award space is released to partner airlines within a week or two of departure. Economy award space is generally released further in advance, though.

Bottom line

While the EVA Air business class award availability trend is kind of unfortunate, this route is still exciting for many. EVA Air has a great business class product, and as far as I know the first nonstop flight between Texas and Taiwan.

  1. I don’t understand the timing of these flights. You can’t connect to/from anywhere else in the US unless you spend the night in Houston. That makes no sense to me.

  2. @ Nic — EVA Air is a nocturnal airline for their longhaul flights. They’re almost all at night. They’re primarily intended to maximize connections in Taipei as opposed to at their destinations.

  3. @ Joey — I’d say LifeMiles, Aeroplan, and United are all fairly good options, since they don’t impose fuel surcharges on EVA Air.

  4. @ sunny — EVA centers their flight times almost entirely around Taipei connections as opposed to connections at their destinations.

    @ Lucky — perhaps this is simply because EVA hasn’t loaded the flight schedule yet? Neither ANA nor United show any nonspace IAH-TPE flights yet. Of course, no guarantee EVA would release any award space once it gets loaded…

  6. EVA runs a nonstop Toronto-Taipei 4x weekly. Business Class seats are bookable more than 3 months in advance. The passenger experience is equivalent to that in Cathay Business Class Toronto-Hong Kong. Both flights leave at 01:30am and both are on 777-300ER without a First Class Cabin. I find that seats open up in the final 3-4 days before flight time.

  7. @ Ivan Y — Well they have loaded the schedule in the sense that it’s in the GDS and bookable, but you’re right, doesn’t even display through ANA or United, so that could very well be it.

  8. I fly EVA exclusively (LAX – TPE-SGN.) I was excited about EVA adding Houston to it’s routes (As my final destination is STL.) But if the connection requires me to spend the night in Houston, it looks like I will have to stick to my LAX flights.

  9. Be warned that Houston’s Customs and Immigration process is a slow and sluggish slog with some of the grouchiest and grumpiest people I’ve ever met. Houston automated half of the process but left the other half dependent on a tiny number of active agents. It’s a true mess. The luggage is processed through ugly and outdated facilities that belong in a demolished shopping mall from the 1980’s. It’s a lot like a baby LAX but without anything interesting nearby.

  10. This is fantastic timing. I can now finally arrive in ASIA in the morning and transfer to a flight to Manila arriving in the morning.

  11. This is the only direct flight to ASIA from Houston arriving in ASIA on a non-stop flight in the ASIA morning. This is totally brilliant! Finally someone gets it. It is a totally nighttime flight, another fantastic thing, everyone go to sleep.

  12. Correction, Eva wasn’t the first non stop to Taiwan, I believe China Airline with the sky-team used to have non stop to Taipei from IAH , and service was discontinued for some reason few years ago

  13. There was a One-Stop from IAH to Taiwan awhile ago but that service was not non-stop. The stop was in Seattle and that technical stop made the whole service not desirable.

  14. @ Lucky — the award space is now searchable on ANA site but — surprise, surprise — there is no J awards from June 2015 – end of schedule (Nov. 2015). Bummer! 🙁

  15. Hmm, still don’t see _any_ award availability in all cabins for first few months starting Fri 6/19. Anyone know what the scoop is?

  16. @Chuck you’re not gonna expect find any award seats with Eva or Air China over peak season (June-august) Because they could maximize their revenue tickets when influx of students visiting/returning during summer, last time I check it was later of September . Unless of course if you don’t mind using devalued united award for ANA first class , then it may be rarely available during the peak season @ 120k one way.
