I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. To me, the relative value of Delta SkyMiles has increased over the past couple of years. Between their partner airlines — like Alitalia, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia, etc. — there are some great redemption opportunities. In January they’ll even begin allowing one-way awards. While there’s no doubt redemptions for travel on Delta are getting more expensive, I think this is great news for those booking award tickets on partner airlines.

Along the same lines, American Express is offering some increased sign-up bonuses on their co-branded Delta SkyMiles credit cards, as follows:

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express

  • 50,000 SkyMiles after making $1,000 in purchases within three months
  • $50 statement credit after making Delta purchase within three months
  • $95 annual fee, waived the first year

Gold Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express

  • 50,000 SkyMiles after making $1,000 in purchases within three months
  • $50 statement credit after making Delta purchase within three months
  • $95 annual fee, waived the first year

Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express

  • 50,000 SkyMiles after making $1,000 in purchases within three months
  • 15,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles
  • $100 statement credit after making Delta purchase within three months
  • $195 annual fee

Per the application pages, these offers are all valid through September 8, 2014.

As far as the terms of the offers go, the following are listed for the two personal versions of the offer:

If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.

While the following is listed for the business version of the offer:

Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product within the last 12 months.

In practice I’m not sure to what degree they’ll be enforced, but those are the rules…

  1. Ben,

Have these cards always had annual fee waived the first year? Maybe I’ve never paid attention since I rarely ever fly Delta.

I guess this is a good time to finally pick these up.

    Matt

  2. I am currently on a Platinum Status Match Challenge from Delta — would the 15K MQM’s from the AMEX Platinum count? The T&C of the Challenge state “Earn 18,750 MQM’s”, wouldn’t this be “earning”?

  3. Lucky what if I have an Amex card but not a DELTA Amex card (or have never had a Delta Amex card)…would I still get the bonus? Their T&C is a little confusing on that issue, no?

  4. I know we’re all flying different lives and if you’re trapped in a hub you might not have much choice, but mother of pearl, paying an annual fee of $95 for this hunk-o-plastic considering what else is out there is crazy. Did it used to be $75 or something? If you offer basically nothing outside of 1 extra mile on flights and you’re another generic, dumpy airline card, your market should be $50 AF. People would probably keep it at a much higher rate.

  5. Instantly approved for the gold. Called in asking about the bonus was told that I will get zero since I had a gold 2 years ago for 75k which I had already received. I was told that I was never eligible for the bonus again unless they(amex or DL) changed their program. Sigh

  6. @Ford, you’re completely ignoring things like free checked bags. That can easily make this card worth it for a family that flies only a few times a year and doesn’t earn status. $25 x 2 bags x2 for round trip, and the fee is already covered.

  7. If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.

That’s a typo. It’s not “may not”, as in maybe, which might make you decide to roll the dice on an app. From personal experience, despite my excellent decades long history with AMEX, it’s WILL NOT. Meaning they will be happy to take your AF, and all your spend, and give you nada as a bonus.

  8. the bonus terms conditions for personal cards will most likely be enforced. I applied for SPG personal card and didn’t get any bonus because I have had the card before. On the other hand I also got PRG and did receive the bonus even tho I had the card in the past… my guess is that one just slipped thru.

  9. “If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer…”

I saw this wording on another AmEx card recently, and am not sure I understand what it means. Does that mean if you have ANY AmEx card, you may not get the bonus? Because that’s ridiculous.

  10. @ stacey — The T&C is confusing. In my experience if you have a different card that’s fine, but the terms are a bit confusing.

  11. @ Ford — I suspect what they’re going after are the people that fly Delta and value the benefits you get when flying Delta, like baggage.

  12. I have a Costco AMEX card under my name and when I contacted AMEX about my eligibility for SPG AMEX bonus they said I didn’t qualify for the sign up points. My wife ended up signing up for SPG and just added me as a secondary card holder. I’m guessing this would probably be the case for the Delta AMEX as well.

  13. following is a cut and paste: “1. Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have had this product”.

I don’t know if your wording is the same but I would argue that this means if I haven’t had the Delta Amex.

When they say “this product” I can’t believe they include all of “those” produces.

  14. @ retirednqcaz — But you’re leaving out the first part of the statement: “If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer.”

  15. Lucky,

There is nothing prior. As you can see, my cut and paste started with the number “1”. There is nothing prior.

  16. @ retirednqcaz — Which card are you looking at? Because just checked “Offer Terms” for each individual one again, and don’t see that.

  17. Maybe they just like me more 🙂 Here’s the whole story:

  18. I suppose I shouldn’t apply for this card either because they might confuse me with the other Ivan Y! 😛

  19. Applied for Gold Business. Declined because I already have the “maximum number of Amex cards.” I currently have 3 personal and 1 business. Maybe I’ll close the Delta personal.
