100% Bonus On Purchased US Airways Miles (Targeted)

US Airways seems to run some sort of promotion on the purchase or sharing of miles almost every month. Often it’s just a straight 100% bonus on purchased miles, sometimes it’s a tiered bonus, and sometimes they offer a 100% bonus on shared miles (which used to be the most lucrative promotion by far, though during the last round of this promotion they raised the cost).

August Buy Miles promotion

Well US Airways just announced their August Buy Miles promotion, which runs through August 22, 2014. This month they’re offering some members up to a 100% bonus on purchased miles, while it seems like other accounts are receiving bonuses of 50%-75% (up to 50,000 miles).

You can earn 100% bonus miles on up to 50,000 purchased miles, for a total of 100,000 miles.

The cost to purchase miles through this promotion

The cost to purchase US Airways miles is ordinarily 3.5 cents each plus a 7.5% federal excise tax, or a total of ~3.76 cents each. So through this promotion the cost to purchase US Airways Dividend Miles is ~1.88 cents per mile.

Buy Miles promotion restrictions

Your account has to be at least 12 days old in order to take part in this promotion. That’s the most major restriction. So if you sign up for an account now you could theoretically still take advantage of this promotion before it ends, but there’s no way of knowing if your account would be eligible or not.

It’s a good reminder to sign up for a US Airways account now in order to be eligible for future promotions though.

US Airways mileage purchases processed through points.com

For what it’s worth, US Airways doesn’t process mileage purchases directly. Instead they’re processed by points.com, meaning they don’t qualify as airfare in terms of credit card spend.

Bottom line

I wouldn’t speculatively purchase US Airways miles at ~1.88 cents each. That’s a high rate at which to speculatively purchase miles.

That being said, there are so many amazing oneworld award redemption opportunities using US Airways miles. If you can plan a trip soon I think this could definitely make sense.

Was your account targeted? Will  you be taking advantage of US Airways’  bonus on purchased miles?

Comments

  1. I cant tell if I qualify for any bonus when I go to purchase. Where does it show what amount of bonus you get? before you enter cc details?

    thank you,

  2. Wish I know how they target the offers. I take care of 3 family member accounts and my own. None of us were targeted for any bonus.

  3. Lucky,

My offer states that I may “Buy or Gift” the miles for a 100% bonus.

Is there an advantage, one over the other, buying or gifting?

    Thanks for the help.

  4. Not selected for accounts that are about 30 days old. US Airways Newbies need not apply.

  5. @ Joan — Technically you can do both, so the only advantage would be if you want the miles to end up in a different account.

  6. So gifting isn’t the same as transferring? I was hoping it would be one of the transfer bonuses

  7. lucky,

What would be the best strategy using buying (I got targeted for 75% bonus) and gifting…to get ALL of my miles over to my wife’s US Airways account so that when the AA/US merger is completed ALL of her miles will be in AA currency?

  8. lucky,

BTW, she got no targeted offer…it is only my account that can buy with the 75% Bonus

  9. @ John DELTA — Well if they offer a bonus on transferred miles in the future then it could make sense to transfer them to her account if that’s your goal. But taking advantage of this promo for your account won’t help with somehow transferring miles to her account.

  10. I received the 100% bonus but will not be taking part. I have become a mileage hoarder lately and currently have 1.3 million miles.

  11. Do you know if it is possible to transfer miles between oneworld partners? I am a CX gold member and they never seem to have such bonus mile purchase offers.

  12. @ SteveHK — Nope, you can redeem miles for travel on the other airlines, but can’t transfer miles between airlines.

  13. So Ive been a member with miles for now over 30 days but it looks like I can’t get the bonus miles offer.. Is there something I’m doing wrong??
