The Avios program (also the currency of British Airways and Iberia’s mileage programs) is offering 50% off the number of Avios required for select longhaul economy class redemptions. The promotion is valid for flights booked through July 13, 2014, and for travel between October 1, 2014, and February 28, 2015. Bookings have to be made through the “generic” Avios website, as opposed to directly through British Airways or Iberia.
The promotion is valid to 21 destinations worldwide. It’s somewhat similar to a promotion they ran during their “12 Day Sale” late last year.
For travel from the UK, the following destinations are reduced from 40,000 Avios to 20,000 Avios roundtrip in economy class:
- New York
For travel from the UK, the following destinations are reduced from 50,000 Avios to 25,000 Avios roundtrip in economy class:
- Los Angeles
- Mexico City
- San Diego
For travel from the UK, the following destination is reduced from 60,000 Avios to 30,000 Avios roundtrip in economy class:
- Sao Paulo
The big “catch” here, if you will, is that the promotion is only valid for travel on British Airways, and they impose massive fuel surcharges on award redemptions.
Take a roundtrip between London and Dubai, for example. When you look at the paid fare, all but ~$105 of it is fuel surcharges, taxes, and fees, which you’d pay on an award ticket anyway. So you’d be paying 20,000 Avios in place of ~$105, and wouldn’t be earning miles on the ticket.
In some cases it could make slightly more sense. For example, between London and Chicago, ~$430 of the fare is actual “base” fare, so you’d be paying 25,000 Avios in place of $430, though would also be giving up earning miles.
There an argument could be made that it’s a non-horrible value.
Bottom line on British Airways 50% off promo
Unless you have a very specific use in mind, are Avios-rich and cash-poor, and can’t route on one of British Airways’ partners without fuel surcharges, this isn’t something I would take advantage of.
