Marriott Rewards 2014 Summer Promotion: Getaway Bonus

Marriott Rewards has just unveiled their 2014 summer promotion. As is usually the case with Marriott, different accounts are targeted with different promotions, so there’s not one “universal” promotion, though there is one that’s more common than the others.

Regardless, Marriott’s summer Getaway Bonus is available for stays between June 1 and August 31, 2014.

My version of the promotion, which seems to be the most common, offers double Marriott Rewards points starting with your third paid stay. You can earn a maximum of 25,000 bonus points.

With Marriott Rewards you ordinarily earn 5-10 points per dollar spent (depending on the brand), so through this promotion you’re looking at earning 10-20 points per dollar spent, up to 25,000 bonus points.

Given that Marriott charges 7,500-45,000 points for a free night, you’ll basically earn one free night at a mid-range property if you maximize this promotion:

Registration is required by July 31, 2014. Bonus points should post to eligible accounts 3-5 days after the stay.

Bottom line

At the end of the day you might as well register for the promotion if you’re staying at a Marriott, though this is hardly a reason to switch any business to them.

In terms of current promotions, here’s what has been announced so far:

In my opinion none of the above promotions actually offer enough incentive to change staying patterns, but that’s hardly surprising in the peak of summer, given the amount of leisure travel going on. The only positive thing about them is that with the exception of the Marriott promotion they all launched on May 1, meaning there was no gap between the new promotion and previous promotion.

Which version of the Marriott Getaway Bonus were you targeted for?

Comments

  1. Double Marriott Rewards points “starting” with your second paid stay — or “after” your second paid stay?

  2. I was hopng there promo this summer would be spend based. I have a twelve night work trip with them coming up in mid-June and now I got to try and figure out how I can get two cheap stays in the first two weeks of June to trigger the bonus. Trying to find cheap hotels in Boston in the summer is pretty hard but I would sure like to hit the double points threshold for my long wokr trip.

  3. Mine has 35000 after 20 nights and additional 10000 after 25 nights for a total of 45000 possible bonus points…Very similar to Megabonus promotion…just a tad smaller

  4. So, double points are earned on the 2nd paid stay, but not the first? Or only on the 3rd?

  5. I got the same as @Praveen. Earn 25,000 bonus points after 15 paid nights, plus an additional 10,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights, up to 35,000 bonus points. Like you said, bonus points are nice, but this doesn’t change a thing for my travel plans.

  6. Mine is 25,000 bonus points after 15 paid nights, and another 10,000 bonus points after 20 paid nights. Max is 35,000 points.

Alas, it looks like I’ll be moving on to a local project. Down side is no travel. Up side is 3.5 miles from home. First time in 2+ years with a local client. We’ll see how it goes!

  7. I got the 35k points after 20 nights, and 10k more points after 25 nights. Max of 45k points.

  8. Pretty weak, Marriott. Certainly no incentive to me. I’ll take double points at Hilton (plus 12 per dollar on Surpass).

  9. It seems that Marriott is getting cheaper and cheaper with the bonus offers. Maybe it is time to find a better hotel program. I like the stay twice and get a free hotel certificate (1-5 level) as I can always use them on trips between our homes on the East Coast.

  10. MARRIOTT IS CHEAP CHEAP ON THEIR SO CALLED BONUS PROMOTION, WHAT A JOKE. WE HAVE USED THEM FOR YEARS BUT WILL BE SWITCHING. WE TRAVEL QUITE OFTEN AND WOULD EARN AT LEAST 4 NIGHTS PER YEAR WITH STAY 2 NIGHTS EARN 1-5 CAT HOTEL, WHAT IS UP WITH THEEIR CHANGE, THEY TRY TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE ITS A GREAT DEAL, NOT SO. IT IS AN INSULT.
