While most of the major hotel chains’ global spring promotions are still underway through the end of the month, we’re already starting to get the details of their global summer promotions. Starwood revealed the details of their Earn Away Get Away promotion a few days ago, and now Hilton has announced the details of their promotion, entitled Double Your HHonors.

Hilton Double Your HHonors promotion dates

The promotion is valid for stays between May 1 and July 31, 2014. Hilton’s current Weekend Rewards promotion runs through April 30, 2014, so it’s nice that there will be no “gap” between promotions.

Hilton Double Your HHonors promotion details

This promotion is as straightforward as they get. Hilton is offering double base HHonors points or double miles on stays at eligible properties.

Now even though Hilton did hugely devalue their award chart last year, I do have to give them credit for actually having decent earning rates at hotels.

As an HHonors member you get 10 base points per dollar spent at Hilton family properties, so through this promotion you’re earning 20 “base” points per dollar spent at participating Hilton family properties. Gold members receive a 25% bonus on base points (an additional 2.5 points per dollar spent), while Diamond members receive a 50% bonus on base points (an additional 5 points per dollar spent).

Then you can earn additional bonus points if you have one of Hilton’s co-branded credit cards:

So as a Diamond member with the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card (as I am), I’m earning 35 points per dollar spent at participating Hiltons — that’s a pretty darn good earnings rate.

It’s worth noting you can also earn bonus miles through this promotion, but one extra mile per dollar spent isn’t nearly as lucrative as 10 extra HHonors points.

Hilton Double Your HHonors non-participating properties

There’s a hefty list of non-participating hotels which have chosen to opt out of this promotion. There are hundreds, and a vast majority of them are in the US. Unfortunately for Hilton and Starwood this seems to be the norm, while as long as I can remember Hyatt has never had properties that didn’t participate, which I appreciate.

That being said, it sure seems to me like even more hotels have opted out this time than in the past.

Hilton Double Your HHonors registration

Registration is already open and is required prior to check-out of your first eligible stay in order to take part in this promotion. You must choose between double miles and double points, and you can’t change your mind regarding earnings preference once you register. Like I said above, choose the double points.

Comparing this promotion to others

Hilton’s current promotion is entitled Weekend Rewards, and offers the following:

  • 1,000 HHonors bonus points for every night you stay
  • 5,000 additional HHonors bonus points for every weekend stay of two nights or more

So the math is quite easy here — you would come out ahead with the summer Double Your HHonors promotion if your average rate is over $100 per night (since you’re earning an additional 10 points per dollar spent) on weekday stays. The last promotion was lucrative if you were staying over weekends, though.

Bottom line on Double Your HHonors

Hilton isn’t my primary chain, though I do have HHonors Diamond status from spending $40,000 on the Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Reserve Card.

While my primary chains are Hyatt and Starwood, they don’t have properties everywhere, so I still do make quite a few Hilton stays. This promotion is straightforward, which I appreciate, and I’d say pretty standard for Hilton.

The thing that frustrates me about the promotion is the number of properties that have opted-out. I realize most hotels are independently owned and that the hotel chains just have management contracts, though as a guest you’d hope that wouldn’t impact you and that your experience would still be “seamless.” Oh well…

Anyway, all things considered (including how well the hotel industry is going) this is actually a fairly decent/average promotion. Now I’m curious to see what kind of a promotion Hyatt offers in summer.

Comments

  1. I’m pretty pumped! I have a three-night stay coming up beginning on May 1st and was quite bummed there wasn’t a promotion announced. As a result, I’m thrilled with this double your honors promotion and will definitely take advantage!

  2. A clarification: it’s not double base points; it’s a bonus equal to the number of base points. So the bonus points don’t count toward elite qualification.

  3. I’ll take any extra points that I can get. Not exciting enough to cause me to increase or change my travel plans. Only have 1 Hilton stay booked for that period and by some miracle it is participating.

  4. I am staying in three different Hilton properties in the near term and am so pleased that none have opted out!!!

  5. I will give Hilton credit for one thing: the lack of a gap between the end of the current promotion and the start of this new one. They always have a gap, so this is a nice change.

However, considering the huge devaluation of HH points, double base point is really nothing. It is not close to being enough of a bonus to get me to switch my Hyatt & Marriott stays back to Hilton.

The Hilton brass has been publicly vocal they they think the VIPS are getting too much from HH. Well, you give me a big enough bonus to choose Hilton, or I stay with Hyatt & Marriott.

  6. hilton is so yesterday…….they are a big ZERO in my plans………go pull the rug out from some other fools feet…………NEVER AGAIN……….mobsters………….

  7. I’ve recently noticed that I’m only getting the double points for the promo in some cases and NOT the double points I PAID for! In all cases the hotel was participating. You might say that it’s excluded in the fine print, but in some cases I received both double points. Got a case open with Hilton but they seem slow in responding. We will see. Sounds a little fraudulent to me to charge more for the double point package and then not award it.

  8. Am I missing something? All the Hilton locations I’m seeing are charging extra for double points. Making it not such a great deal.

  9. @ Kyle McKenna — That’s a different promotion entirely, whereby you can pay extra to double your points. That’s in addition to their standard promotion.
