American Bonus Miles Between The US And Tokyo

American is presently running two promotions offering bonus miles for travel to Japan, for flights operated by both American and Japan Airlines.

Double miles for Japan Airlines travel to Japan

American is offering double redeemable AAdvantage miles for nonstop travel between New York JFK and Tokyo Narita. Flights operated by Japan Airlines qualify, whether they’re marketed by Japan Airlines or American Airlines.

The promotion is valid for flights taken April 9 through May 2, 2014, as well as May 6 through May 31, 2014.

The following fare class are eligible for this promotion:

This offer applies only to AAdvantage members who purchase and fly on purchased, published Business Class fares booked in J, R, D or I; Economy Class fares booked in Y, W, B, H, K, M, L, V or S on American Airlines marketed flights; Business Class fares booked in J, C, D, X or I; Economy Class fares booked in Y, W, B, E, H, K, M, L, V or S on Japan Airlines operated flights.

Registration is required prior to travel using promotion code NYJP2.

Double miles for American Airlines travel to Japan

American is also offering double redeemable AAdvantage miles for nonstop travel between Chicago or Los Angeles and Tokyo Narita. Flights operated by American Airlines qualify, whether they’re marketed by Japan Airlines or American Airlines.

The promotion is valid for flights taken April 9 through May 31, 2014.

The following fare class are eligible for this promotion:

Offer applies only to AAdvantage members who purchase and fly on purchased, published First Class fares booked in F, A, P; Business Class fares booked in J, R, D or I; Economy Class fares booked in Y, B, H, K, M, L, V or S on American Airlines operated flights; First Class fares booked in F, A; Business Class fares booked in J, C, D, X or I; Economy Class fares booked in Y, B,H, K, M, L, V or S on Japan Airlines marketed flights.

Registration is required prior to travel using promotion code TYS14.

Bottom line

Heavily discounted economy fares are specifically excluded here, which is unfortunate. In the past American has offered bonus miles for travel to Asia on heavily discounted economy fares, which made it rather lucrative to book a discounted economy class ticket, upgrade to business class, and earn tons of miles in the process.

So this is something to be aware of if you have a trip to Japan coming up, but it’s probably not worth going out of your way to take advantage of this promotion.

  1. I have a flight between Chicago and Tokyo coming up on American later this month, but unfortunately it’s booked into Q. Ah well, at least I got a good deal on the fare.

  2. I was looking for a such a promo last week and didn’t see any (jal had their own). I flew to nrt on the 10th and am flying back next week. I signed up for this promo through your blog. Is there any way to get the double miles on the to the flight though it says must sign up before travel? Thanks.

  4. Hey Lucky,

The last time AA ran this promo….I had a flight that qualified for the bonus….as best as I can tell, if you get the double miles as a Exec Platinum….you do not get this extra bonus miles…..am I correct here? If not, I will have to go back to them and asked for the miles
    🙂

  5. @ jamesyvr — You absolutely do get the redeemable miles bonus even as an Executive Platinum member, assuming you qualify.
