Hyatt Diamond Suite Upgrades Expire Soon

One of my favorite benefits of Hyatt Diamond status is the four confirmed Suite Upgrade Awards I receive each year just for requalifying. Each can be used to confirm an upgrade for up to seven consecutive nights at a single property at the time of booking.

As long as an entry level suite is available you can redeem points for it. These can be redeemed on revenue rates as well as Points + Cash bookings. The only exclusion is that you can’t use them on outright free night redemptions.

I figured I’d post a quick reminder that last year’s Hyatt Diamond Suite Upgrade Awards expire at the end of February, which is this Friday. The important thing to note is that you only have to make bookings using them by Friday, though the stay can be on a subsequent date. So for example, I had two Diamond Upgrade Awards remaining, so I used them to confirm suites at two Park Hyatts for my dad’s “big” birthday trip later this year.

So if you have any left over, be sure to redeem them by Friday or they’ll disappear. Keep in mind that if you change your dates later, the Upgrade Awards technically can’t be transferred with the new reservation, so whatever you book with them has to be “set in stone” or you’ll risk losing them.

As usual, you can expect that this year’s Diamond Suite Upgrade Awards will post around March 1.

As a point of comparison, Starwood offers their Platinum members with 50 nights annually 10 Suite Night Awards, each of which can be used to upgrade to a suite for one night. The benefit of these is that they can even be used on free night redemptions, though the downside is that they can only confirm upgrades up to five days before arrival, so there’s still some gambling involved. Starwood did extend the expiration date of last year’s Suite Night Awards from January to April, so there’s still time to redeem those. I just redeemed my last two from last year at the W Guangzhou.

For reference, the full terms for the Hyatt Diamond Suite Upgrade Awards read as follows:

Suite award is valid for reservations booked from 3/1/2013 to 2/28/2014 at participating Hyatt hotels and resorts where suite accommodations are available, and may be applied to future reservations. In the event a Suite award is redeemed for stay dates beyond expiration date and reservation is cancelled after expiration date, the Suite award will be forfeited. Upgrade must be requested and redeemed at time of reservation and is subject to availability. Upgrade confirmation will be provided at time of reservation. A complimentary suite upgrade is only valid on paid stays/nights, when paying an Eligible Rate for a maximum of 7 consecutive nights. Member must call 800.400.2261 or their nearest worldwide reservation center to redeem upgrade award. Upgrade awards are not available at Hyatt Key West Resort and Spa, Hyatt Regency Kyoto, Hyatt Regency Paris-Madeleine, Hyatt Regency Tulsa, Hyatt Regency Wichita, Hyatt Santa Barbara, Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, Park Hyatt Sydney, Hyatt House properties, Hyatt Place properties and Hyatt Residence Club resorts. For the purpose of this award, a suite provides for standard one-bedroom accommodations. Suite upgrade award is not valid toward Specialty, Premier, Presidential or Diplomatic Suites. Award is not transferable, negotiable or redeemable for cash or other substitutions. Credit will not be issued for unused upgrade awards. Guest is responsible for all charges exclusive of awards. There are limited numbers of suites available at each property. Hyatt reserves the right to alter or withdraw this program at any time without notice. 1. I have 2 nights booked at hyatt regency at waikiki beach, hawaii at the end of april. i booked them using Ultimate rewards points. If i did the diamond challenge, would these suite upgrades be applicable for my stay? hmm?

  2. @ will — To clarify, did you transfer Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt and then book through them, or did you use the “pay with points” option, whereby you get 1.25 cents per Ultimate Rewards point towards the cost of a room?

  3. Thanks for note about booking after the expiry date. I was worrying that mine would go to waste. Even got an agent over the phone who said she couldn’t book it because of the expiration. I’ll just put down the phone and call someone else.

  4. I am losing diamond status on Friday. If I book a reservation now while I’m still diamond and use my suite upgrade for a future reservation, will it still apply since I won’t be diamond at the time of the actual stay?

  5. @lucky – I transferred the UR points to Hyatt Program at 18,000 points/night. should i have booked it through the chase website instead to have the suite upg’s available for use?! oh no!

  6. @ will — You did the right thing, but free night reservations aren’t eligible for Diamond suite upgrades. You can always call and see if they have Points + Cash available. If they do, you can book that and then use a suite upgrade.

  7. Regarding the 60 day challenge: I understand that if I do the challenge starting in March, the status will remain until the end of May because it doesn’t expire until the end of the month. Is this correct? I have a reservation from May 30-June 2. If my Diamond status lasts until the end of May, would it apply to my whole stay? i.e. free breakfast for the whole stay? Thank you!

  8. @ Jalem — Correct, it would be valid through the end of that month. My guess would be that you’d get all Diamond benefits as long as you have the status as of the time you check-in. I can’t guarantee it, though.

  9. I’m sorry. Just to clarify-does 4 suite upgrades mean 4 nights or 4 stays? Like do you use 1 for a 4 night stay or do you need to use 4?

  10. Terrific. Can I make a reservation and add my parents to the reservation(or only my father) and have them use the upgrade?

  11. “Keep in mind that if you change your dates later, the Upgrade Awards technically can’t be transferred with the new reservation, so whatever you book with them has to be “set in stone” or you’ll risk losing them.”

So, on a YMMV basis, can you sometimes get lucky and be able to change the date of a stay and still have the suite upgrade apply (pending availability)? Obviously this is on a case by case basis and there are no guarantees.

  12. @ Michael — That does get a bit tricky. In practice it usually works, though technically you’re supposed to be there. But at a US property I can’t imagine it will be an issue.

  13. @ michael — US properties generally do less to verify who the guests are. Most foreign properties scan copies of passports, etc. Not to say it wouldn’t work, but it just adds another wrinkle.
