Register For Chase Freedom Q1 2014 Bonus Categories

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. Please check out our advertiser policy for further details about the partners we work with. Thanks for your support!

Update: This offer for Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® is expired, but there’s currently an opportunity to earn 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 within first 90 days of having the card. Learn more about the special offer here.

The Chase Freedom® Card is a no annual fee credit card that offers 5x points in rotating quarterly categories. You can earn the 5x points for up $1,500 in spend per quarter, meaning “maxing” out the bonuses each quarter you’d earn a total of 30,000 points per year.

Anyway, they do make you “opt in” to earning the bonuses each quarter, and registration just opened for their first quarter 2014 bonus categories, valid January 1 through March 31, 2014. These categories are as follows:

  • Gas stations
  • Move theaters
  • Starbucks

Ultimately these aren’t the best bonus categories I’ve seen. I’m sure many of us frequent Starbucks, though probably don’t spend $1,500 per quarter there. It could potentially make sense to stock up on some Starbucks gift cards, though I doubt most would want to buy $1,500 worth just to earn bonus points. Gas stations are also useful, and lots of gas stations sell gift cards, so that’s a way to potentially pick up some extra points.

Each point can be redeemed for one cent cash back, though if you link your card to one that accrues Ultimate Rewards points (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Plus® Business Credit Card), these can be used as “premium” Ultimate Rewards points and transferred to partner airlines and hotel programs.

  1. Haven’t found any local gas stations that allow you to load a gift card with a credit card. Any idea what chains allow that?

  2. I do most of my spend ex-US and I’ve noticed that some credit card companies restrict these types of (5x, 2x, etc) bonuses to US-only purchases. I can’t find anything in the Chase terms – do you know how they apply to ex-US spend?

  3. @ Brian H. — To be honest I’m not positive with the Freedom Card, though for international spend it’s probably not worth it regardless since the card has foreign transaction fees.
