AmEx Small Business Saturday Registration Open

American Express has been running a Small Business Saturday promotion for several years now, whereby American Express card members can register to receive a statement credit for purchases made on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (which this year is November 30, 2013).

In past years Small Business Saturday offered a $25 statement credit per card, meaning if you had several authorized users, each user could receive that credit. As I wrote about in October, though, this year the statement credit will be $10 per card instead, though you should still be able to get the bonus for reach authorized user on an account.

Registration for Small Business Saturday is now open, and will stay so either until 11:59PM MST on Saturday, November 30, 2013, or whenever the registration cap is reached, whichever comes first. Upon registering you should receive an email confirmation from American Express confirming your eligibility.

After registering you simply have to make a single in-store purchase of $10 or more at a qualifying small business.

The full terms of the promotion are as follows:

  1. Limit one (1) $10 statement credit per American Express Card. To be eligible, Card Members must register any eligible American Express Card for this offer at ShopSmall.com. Corporate Cards and all prepaid Card products (other than American Express Serve®) are not eligible.
  2. The number of registrations is limited. Registration opens at 12:00 A.M. MST (“Mountain Standard Time”) on November 24, 2013 and will continue until 11:59 P.M. MST on November 30, 2013, unless the registration limit is reached sooner.
  3. To receive the $10 statement credit, the Card Member must use his or her registered Card to spend $10 or more in a single, in-store transaction at a qualifying small business location on Saturday, November 30, 2013. To receive the credit, the transaction must equal $10 or more (for example, if your transaction is only for $5, you will not receive a credit). Multiple transactions of less than $10 will not qualify even if the combined total of those transactions is over $10. You may purchase multiple items that together equal $10 or more, but you must purchase them in a single transaction to receive the statement credit. Online transactions do not qualify.
  4. Qualifying small business locations appear on the Small Business Saturday® Map, available beginning on November 21, 2013 atShopSmall.com. Please note that business location information provided on the Small Business Saturday Map may contain inaccuracies or errors, including as a result of information provided by third parties. Transactions with political campaigns or political action committees are not eligible, regardless of whether they appear on the Small Business Saturday Map.
  5. If American Express does not receive information that identifies a transaction as having occurred in-store at a qualifying small business location on November 30, 2013, the transaction will not qualify for the statement credit. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you will not receive the statement credit if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party or if the merchant uses a mobile or wireless card reader to process it.
  6. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after November 30, 2013, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Note that American Express may not receive information that identifies your transaction as a qualifying transaction if the items from your purchase are not all provided to you on November 30, 2013. For example, if you purchase an item that is not available until after November 30, 2013, that transaction will not count towards determining whether your purchase qualifies for the offer.
  7. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned or cancelled.
  8. The Card Registration Terms and Conditions will also apply at enrollment.

  1. This is a no brainer! Just registered all 6 of my cards plus two AU. I can fill up my car in $10+ increments at a local AMEX friendly gas station and then spend the rest of it at a local hardware store stocking up on stuff I use all the time around the house at $10+ a transaction. Thanks AMEX!

  2. Got the email confirmations for the two Amex cards where I am the cardholder, but have not received email conformations from registering the account number for the additional authorized user on either account. (That is, did 4 registraions; only got two confirmations. Used a different email for each of the 4 registrations. Checked SPAM folder; not there either.)

However, when I attempted to repeat the registration for one of the cards for which I did not get an email confirmation, the web site said the card was already registered. Will what happens.

  3. If you really want to help the small business use Visa or Mastercard. Small businesses hate Amex’s higher transaction fees. That’s why a lot won’t take Amex or encourage you to use another card.

  4. Carl P. – That’s generally true, but a counter point is that Amex card holders spend more than Visa/MCs on average so small business can typically maake up that fee in volume.

  5. Carl,

I’m no industry insider but I think the transaction fees on cash can be as low as zero percent. The more you know.

  6. Does anyone know if you can make two purchases at the same store with two different cards.

    I couldn’t find anything in the T’s & C’s. . .

  7. Having trouble registering a couple cards. Registered my wife’s second 1 fine, but not the first, nor my 3 Amex. Any ideas?

  8. Funny, but after replying to you, I went and tried to register those 4 cards from my work computer, and they all worked fine. If you somehow worked some “computer/blogger” magic, thanks! 😉 It probably deserves to be said again: I sure appreciate the info from your blog!
